During the opening act of 2002's Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, there is a brief but hilariously memorable exchange between Obi-Wan Kenobi and a death stick dealer known as Elan Sleazebaggano. While Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker are hunting Zam Wesell, the bounty hunter hired by Jango Fett to assassinate Senator Padmé Amidala, the two Jedi find themselves at the Outlander Club in Coruscant's Uscru District. Obi-Wan decides to stop at the bar for a drink, at which point he is approached by Elan.

"You wanna buy some death sticks?" Elan asks. Obi-Wan, using a Jedi mind trick, replies, "You don't want to sell me death sticks." "I don't want to sell you death sticks," Elan says. Obi-Wan then delivers the fateful line, "You want to go home and rethink your life," to which Elan responds, "I want to go home and rethink my life" before turning and walking away. While we don't know too much about what canonically happened to Elan after the fact, we can safely say he did go home and rethink his life.

In September of 2019, IDW Publishing's canon anthology comic book series Star Wars Adventures subtly followed up on Elan's life-changing encounter with Obi-Wan. Written by Delilah S. Dawson and illustrated by Margaux Saltel, Star Wars Adventures #25 takes place on Coruscant shortly before the events of A New Hope and sheds some light on the friendship between Princess Leia Organa and Amilyn Holdo.

Sure enough, during a conversation between Leia and Holdo, you can spot none other than Elan Sleazebaggano walking in the background. Elan looks to be in a much better place than when we last saw him, as he is seen smiling and holding the hand of what appears to be his young child, who also has a big smile on their face. When asked by a reader if that character was who they thought it was, Dawson replied, "Sometimes you have to rethink your life."

While it appears Elan eventually got his life together in canon, Star Wars Adventures actually wasn't the first time the franchise addressed what happened to the character after the events of Attack of the Clones. However, previous attempts have been removed from series canon, now falling under the Legends banner.

In Legends, in which his surname is spelled Sel'Sabagno, Elan was given the backstory of being a medical student on Coruscant who began peddling death sticks after falling in with the wrong crowd. In addition to illicit substances, Elan also dealt in weapons, even attempting to sell Rancor nail blades to Jango Fett (to no avail) a mere two days before trying to sell death sticks to Obi-Wan.

Shortly after the Jedi's mind trick, Elan did, in fact, go home and rethink his life top to bottom. However, while he vowed to no longer sell death sticks and broke his own addiction to the drug, Elan did slip back into his criminal ways, selling weapons and stolen property. In the 2004 novel Boba Fett: Pursuit -- which takes place three years after Attack of the Clones -- Elan even aids Boba Fett in an unsuccessful attempt to kill Jedi Master Mace Windu, who killed Boba's father Jango.

By the end of the Clone Wars, Elan once again tried to turn over a new leaf. In the official Star Wars webcomic Evasive Action: Recruitment, he is seen handing out pamphlets on Coruscant's lower levels, warning others of the dangers of death stick use. In yet another chance encounter, he attempts to spread his message to fugitive Jedi Drake Lo'gaan and Zonder but is quickly shoved aside by a Clone Trooper chasing the two. After collecting himself, Elan once again muses, "I need to rethink my life."

So, while Legends never quite got around to giving Elan his happy ending, Star Wars Adventures seems to imply that, as far as canon is concerned, it all worked out for him in the end.
