After the success of last year's anthology series Star Wars: Visions, a new batch of shorts is reportedly on the horizon.

Cinelinx is reporting that not only will Visions get a second season on Disney+ but it will arrive this year. Lucasfilm has yet to even confirm a second season of the show, so fans will have to wait for the official word on when and if more episodes of the anthology might debut. Of course, given the positive response to the first nine shorts, it's not hard to imagine Disney and Lucasfilm wanting to make more.

The nine episodes of Visions, created by seven different Japanese studios, brought together the worlds of anime and Star Wars in the fall of last year. Overall, responses from fans and critics were largely positive, thanks in part to the variety of animation styles and stories on display. It also helped that the stories existed outside of the main Star Wars canon, allowing creators more freedom and shielding the project from the blowback that often follows fans' expectations not being met.

Given the positive reception, it's not surprising that Lucasfilm would want to return to the format for more stories, especially since executive producer James Waugh said last year that Season 2 of Visions was contingent on such a reaction. "I think we would love to do more Star Wars: Visions, we'll have to assess the reaction and what the fandom wants," Waugh said when asked about the possibility of doing more shorts. "[Producer Kanako Shirasaki] and I are probably incredibly biased; we love these shorts and really do think that this is such a great framing for Star Wars."

In a second interview, Waugh also spoke about how Visions could lead to more non-canon Star Wars projects, further breaking with the mandate to tell one cohesive story across mediums that was enacted when Disney bought Lucasfilm. "It's something we are interested in. The reason we approached Visions as it was is we wanted to empower specific creators within their process and medium," Waugh said. "So much of the stuff you see in Visions… the specificity of anime as a medium justifies a lot of the storytelling. So do I think we could do more non-timeline storytelling? I think under the Visions framework, absolutely."

Season 1 of Star Wars: Visions is currently streaming on Disney+.
