WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: Visions Episode 3, “The Twins” streaming now on Disney+.

In both the Legends and canon versions of Star Wars, Sith history was filled with warriors. Their philosophy of domination and subjugation was never simply a philosophical idea. It has always been backed up by real prowess with the Force, and with a lightsaber. With that said, one aspect that hasn’t received much attention in modern canon is the concept of Sith armor. That changed in Star Wars: Visions Episode 3, “The Twins.”

So far in modern canon, Darth Vader has been the only Sith to wear a real suit of armor. It, however, was far from an advanced piece of combat technology. In Legends, Vader refused to update his suit, and in canon Palpatine kept him from upgrading. Regardless, the suit was designed to keep Vader in constant pain. It kept the dark lord alive after his duel on Mustafar, but didn’t offer any additional benefits. The suit of armor in “The Twins,” on the other hand, offered its wearers a substantial power boost.

The story in Episode 3 revolves around a set of immensely powerful dark side twins. They were created by Sith cultists with the power of the dark side and imbued with the strength from a large Kyber crystal. Accepting the cultists’ purpose for their lives, the twins set out to dominate the galaxy, brining order to an otherwise chaotic existence. To do so, they built a giant hypercanon that is powered with the same dark energy that created them.

At the beginning of the episode, the twins – Darth Am and Darth Karre -- both wore an advanced set of Sith armor that was fueled by their Kyber crystal. The armor enhanced their powers in the Force, and wearing it made the twins nearly unstoppable. However, just before firing their hypercanon at a planet, Darth Karre stole the Kyber crystal in an attempt to save his sister from the death he foresaw for her. Naturally, Darth Am was furious. She attacked her twin, and that was when she put the armor’s true potential on display.

Visions The Twins Armor overloads

In an uncharacteristically selfless move by a Sith, Darth Karre ditched his set of armor to try and get through to his sister, but she wasn’t having it. So, the two of them literally break the Kyber crystal in two with the Force – each getting a half of it. Karre puts his piece into a lightsaber, but Am puts her half into her armor. This meant that rather than just being powered by refined Kyber energy and enhancing Am’s connection to the Force, the armor literally had the raw power of the crystal coursing though it.

In essence, the suit of armor became a wearable weapon. Multiple, flexible blades practically limitless in length extended from the suit like a lightwhip.. There was no way that Karre could have stood up the armor’s power, but in the end, it was too much for Am to handle too. The raw power within the Kyber crystal was too much for the suit, which overloaded, causing great pain for Am. So, the kyber-powered armor offered Darth Am immeasurable power, but at a very high price. It would have killed her had Karre not destroyed the crystal with the combined power of his lightsaber and his ship’s hyperdrive.
