The following contains light spoilers for Parts I through III of Obi-Wan Kenobi.

For years, fans have waited for Ewan McGregor to return as his character from the Star Wars prequels. Finally, he’s back in Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+, following the character about 10 years after Revenge of the Sith, when he’s called away from Tatooine to save young Leia Organa. Yet, it’s the new villain, Reva, the Third Sister played by Moses Ingram, who is one of the best new Star Wars characters in years.

Sadly, because almost all fandoms have a toxic strain in them, not everyone has greeted the new character with open arms. Star Moses Ingram shared racist messages she received on social media for the offense of simply existing as a Black woman in Star Wars. Both Lucasfilm and series star Ewan McGregor released supportive statements condemning these comments. Not only are the messages Ingram received racist and hateful, the general "critique" of her character is founded in a deep misunderstanding about what makes a great Star Wars villain. While it’s not confirmed, it seems pretty clear that Reva is one of the escaped younglings from the first scene of the show. If she saw an unmasked Darth Vader killing Jedi, it makes sense she knows who he actually is.

Fortress Inquisitorius

On one hand, Reva represents a different take on the fall of Anakin Skywalker. She is powerful in the Force, and able to do things we’ve not seen many others able to do. For example, she is able to read someone’s thoughts through the Force, something we’ve not seen anyone but Kylo Ren do. She is brash and reckless, leaping (across rooftops) before looking. She is obsessed with finding and defeating the person she considers her enemy. Ultimately, she gives into her fear, hate and anger to become a terror of the dark side at the side of Lord Vader. Yet, unlike Anakin, she did not have an Obi-Wan or any of his other friends to offer her a new path. When the Jedi Order fell, she was left to survive on her own, a path that led her to the dark side of the Force and the Inquisitorius.

Obviously, since Obi-Wan Kenobi was in A New Hope, we know she fails her mission to kill him. Yet, we also know that the Grand Inquisitor shows up in Star Wars Rebels and that Reva doesn’t. This means, she’s likely to be dispatched with extreme prejudice, either at the hands of Kenobi, Vader or even a healed Grand Inquisitor. Yet, Lucasfilm would be fools to kill off a villain this fantastic after just one series. Reva, and Moses Ingram, have the potential to be present in Star Wars stories for many years to come.

While Reva represents, in a way, all of Obi-Wan’s failures with Anakin, she could ultimately share some qualities with another iconic Star Wars villain: Darth Maul. At least, beyond simply both of them hating Obi-Wan Kenobi. Like Reva, Maul’s story is also a tragedy. He was taken from his home and given, like property, to Palpatine. After the events of The Phantom Menace, he was presumed dead but survived. Kept alive by his hate and anger, he then sought revenge for himself and, as Sith are wont to do, power. Yet, whether it was from the throne of Mandalore, the head of the Crimson Dawn criminal organization, or trying to make Ezra Bridger his new apprentice, Maul is destined to fail. He’s a Sisyphean figure in the Star Wars mythology. He rolls his metaphorical boulders up metaphorical hills, only for them to tumble back down to the base every time he gets close to the top.

Star Wars inquisitor Reva

The reason Reva could be a new Maul-like figure is that at her core, she is a character as disillusioned as Obi-Wan Kenobi. Yet, instead of despair, she turned her fear and anger into hate to fuel her dark side powers. When the Empire also eventually fails her, casting her aside with nary a second thought, she will have more scores to settle. As interesting as the Jedi and the Sith are, there is plenty of room for other Force users to cause trouble in the galaxy far, far away.

Ultimately, whatever happens to the Third Sister of the Inquisitorius, Star Wars fans should be grateful that we got Moses Ingram to play this role. She is an award-winning actor, Ivy-League-educated woman who embodies everything that is great about Star Wars. Her character is supposed to make the audience angry, but never should that fictional frustration turn into real-world harassment. Fans of Star Wars who understand what these stories are all about get that, and — like the "just people" who showed up to fight the Final Order in Rise of Skywalker — there are far more of us than there are of them.

Watch Moses Ingram stun and delight audiences as Reva the Third Sister in Obi-Wan Kenobi, which debuts new episodes Wednesdays on Disney+.
