Star Wars is coming to the world of virtual reality this month in Star Wars: Vader Immortal, a new title for the Oculus Quest headset.

As the first volume in a planned trilogy of VR experiences, the game stars a Force-sensitive smuggler captured and brought to Vader's base of operations on Mustafar and tasked with helping Darth Vader in recovering artifacts serving as an active bridge between life and death.

For writer and executive producer David S. Goyer, who previously wrote Batman Begins and Man Steel, the VR experience offers the opportunity for fans to witness a new side to the iconic Sith Lord as he undergoes a secret, spiritual quest.

"I raised a question, ‘What does Vader do when he’s not Force-choking people?'" explained Goyer in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "What does he do when he walks into his meditation chamber, and his shoulders slump, and he doesn’t have the weight of the Empire on him for that moment? What does he think about?"

The natives of Mustafar are unsurprisingly resistant to Vader exploiting their ancient relics including the mystical Ghost Glass, and violence is sure to erupt as players how learn to operate a lightsaber and more about their mysterious employer.

Additionally, Goyer has hinted that future installments will have players able to tap into Force powers of their own.

"As we move into the second episode, there’s a lot of one-on-one interaction between you and Vader, who has to teach you the Force," teased Goyer. "As you can imagine, he’s not the most patient teacher.”

Volume 1 of Star Wars: Vader Immortal will be released on the Oculus Quest headset on May 21.
