Vader Immortal, the new Star Wars VR story series from ILMxLAB and Oculus, is officially on its way, allowing players to finally get up close and personal with everyone’s favorite Sith Lord, Darth Vader.
ILMxLAB, the virtual reality laboratory from Lucasfilm and Industrial Light and Magic, made the announcement at Facebook’s Oculus Connect 5 conference on Wednesday, as first reported by Venture Beat. Along with confirmation of the full title, Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series - Episode I, ILMxLAB also released a teaser trailer for the first game in the series.
The first installment of a planned three-part series, Vader Immortal: Episode I was written and executive produced by David S. Goyer, the writer behind Batman Begins, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the upcoming Masters of the Universe. The story series will be a launch title for Facebook’s standalone Oculus Quest headset when the headset ships in the spring.
Taking place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, the events of the series start as the player's ship is pulled out of hyperspace and down to the volcanic world of Mustafar, where they end up face-to-face with Darth Vader. The rest of the series is promised to be a new, “yet untold” story in the Star Wars universe.
“Whether it’s hearing Darth Vader’s breathing behind you and physically turning to face him in person or wielding a lightsaber with your own hands, Vader Immortal captures the ultimate wish fulfillment," Oculus head of experience Colum Slevin said. "Untethered VR immerses you in this universe and places you at the center of this amazing story.”
Vader Immortal: Episode I is planned to release inspring 2019 on the Oculus Quest.
