In the 42 years since it entered our lives, Star Wars has become the most popular and successful franchise in entertainment. Its reach has stretched beyond movies into television, novels, comic books and theme park attractions. When it returned to the big screen with The Force Awakens in 2015, there were some questions about whether it would still be the phenomenon it once was. The film’s $2 billion worldwide box office answered all those questions and then some. The story of a farm boy with a mysterious destiny who joins a princess and a smuggler to rebel against the evil empire has inspired generations to find the hero in themselves. However, there are some questionable aspects of the movies we’ve all decided to overlook, because we love it so much.

We’re not going to discuss the obvious ones, like why Stormtroopers are such bad shots, or why their armor seems to offer no protection from blasters. We also have questions about why the Jedi Order couldn’t detect the evil Sith lord right under their noses until it was too late -- that makes them pretty bad at their job of protecting the Republic. We need to examine the clearly non-heroic things our heroes do, and the decisions they made that went against the characters we’d come to know. This is not a negative look at Star Wars. We all love Star Wars. Though, it's not perfect, so here’s our choices for things that Star Wars fans ignore, because we love it so much.

19 HAN SOLO IS A JERK

We love Han Solo, but the reality is he's not that nice of a guy. He's dismissive of Leia when they first meet, he completely disrespects Obi-Wan's religious beliefs and he carelessly bails on the rebellion, before coming back to help.

His worst moment comes in his most famous scene. As he's about to be frozen in carbonite, Leia professes her love and he responds with “I know.” Seriously, he’s probably about to die and instead of comforting her with his own confession of love, that's his answer. If a guy did that today, he'd be the most hated boyfriend in the world, but since Han is so charming, we don’t talk about it.

18 VADER’S BAD JOKE

From the moment we meet Darth Vader in A New Hope, it’s clear he is the most feared man in the galaxy. Possibly, even more than the Emperor, because he’s the one there every day, Force Choking everyone. Rebel and Imperial soldiers alike are terrified of him.

This intimidation is on full display in Rogue One when Vader meets Orson Krennic to be briefed on the construction of the Death Star. The conversation ends with Krennic getting choked -- it’s classic Vader right up until he makes a ridiculous pun. Apparently, even one of the most powerful Sith Lords ever makes awful dad jokes. It doesn’t make us less scared of him, but it’s not his best moment.

17 LUKE ENDS THOUSANDS OF LIVES ON THE DEATH STAR

Luke Skywalker destroying the Death Star is considered one of the most heroic moments in film. It's the first time he really uses the Force, and it's the rebellion's first major victory. However, we never talk about all the Stormtroopers and Imperial employees that perished that day.

We now know that there were probably some Stormtroopers like Finn, who weren’t fully down with the cause. We can also guess that there were more than a few kids like young Han, who just wanted to get away from their terrible lives. They didn’t deserve that fate. Yes, the Empire was evil, but let’s not pretend that Luke is completely innocent.

16 THE EMPIRE’S FILE ROOM

In Rogue One, we finally see the mission to get the secret plans to the Death Star. We know it won’t end well, but the most surprising scene actually takes place in the Empire’s file storage room. It’s this weird vault where the person has to use a crane to find the specific file they need and manually bring it up. This seems like a really inefficient way to access files.

Every time someone wants to check an important file, they have to go to this vault, pass through security, operate a giant crane and wait for it to be delivered back up. So, the Empire has the ability to build a Death Star, but doesn’t have a better file storage system?

15 LEIA SOMEHOW REMEMBERS PADME

Natalie Portman as Senator Padme Amidala in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones

There are a lot of moments where the original trilogy and the prequels don’t line up. One of the most notable is where Leia talks about her mother in Return of the Jedi, but in Revenge of the Sith, Padme passes away right after childbirth. Leia tells Luke that she remembers her mother being very beautiful, kind and sad.

We suppose these images could be a part of Leia’s Force abilities, but honestly it was just a missed continuity issue. Yes, it was more dramatic to lose Padme the way we did, but it’s such an egregious overlook of an important moment in the original films. Of course, for the sake of enjoying our movies, we don’t discuss it.

14 POE DOESN’T FEEL BAD ABOUT THE BOMBERS' LIVES

We understand that in the heat of battle, there’s no time to wallow in mistakes. Especially when the First Order is literally on your tail. However, Poe’s insubordination at the beginning of The Last Jedi costs the Resistance the entire bomber group, including Rose’s sister.

He is immediately demoted by Leia and left out of any decision making by Holdo. He then goes on to mount a secret mission to overthrow the admiral. In the midst of all this, never once does he exhibit any sadness or guilt for all the losses he caused. We know Poe is a good guy, so we have no doubt that he will redeem himself in Episode IX.

13 LEIA DOESN’T GO TO MEET LUKE

For most of The Force Awakens everyone is trying to get their hands on the map to Luke Skywalker's whereabouts. Once everything is settled and the Resistance can finally send someone to find him, Leia sends Rey, a stranger.

You would think after all this time, and after just losing Han, she couldn't possibly let anyone else go see her long missing brother. We understand that Rey needed to meet Luke for story purposes, but from an emotional standpoint, it should have been Leia. Yes, she had responsibilities with the Resistance, but there were obviously other leaders who would be there to help out.

12 LUKE ALREADY CAN FLY AN X-WING

From the moment we meet Luke, he's desperate to get off Tatooine. He wants to go to the academy and be with his friends. Later, he brags to Han about what a good pilot he is, but he seems to know what nothing does once he's in the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon.

In the Star Wars Universe, we know that every space ship is different, so how is it that Luke can fly an X-Wing like he's been doing it all his life. Far as we know, the only thing he's flown are bush planes back home. Not only is he an instant expert, he apparently has battle experience and can attack the Death Star, because it's just like Beggar's Canyon.

11 LUKE GETS OVER LOSING HIS AUNT AND UNCLE VERY FAST

Luke Skywalker is a poor farm boy who lives in the middle of nowhere on a desert planet. The one constant in his life is his family. Uncle Owen and aunt Beru have raised him since he was a baby -- they're basically his parents. When they perish at the hands of the Empire, it's a devastating moment that spurs Luke to action.

Only, he never mentions them again. Once he and Obi-Wan get to Mos Eisley, he's moved on and is all about learning the Force. In fact, he's more broken up over losing Obi-Wan, a man he just met, than he is about the family that raised him. We didn't know ungratefulness was one of the Jedi tenets.

10 REY IS AN EXPERT WITH A LIGHTSABER

Rey is clearly a remarkable woman. She's survived living on her own on Jakku her entire life, and never loses hope that someone is coming back for her. When she has the chance to sell BB-8, she doesn't, because she knows something's up. Even knowing all this, there's no reason she should be so good with a lightsaber so fast.

She has an instant connection to Luke's lightsaber and figures out her Force powers pretty quick, but that shouldn't mean she's an expert fighter. She handles Kylo Ren, a trained Force user, like he's a nobody. While this may say more about him, there's a big difference between beating down thugs with a staff and taking down the First Order's top Sith.

9 JEDI MIND TRICKS ARE INVASIVE AND DANGEROUS

Jedi Mind Tricks, where a Force user changes a person’s mind, to see or think what they want them to, is the most well known power of the Jedi Order. We first saw Obi-Wan use it on Stormtroopers, convincing them that “these aren’t the droids you’re looking for.”

Here’s the thing, it’s very invasive and could even be classified as assault. Who gave the Jedi the right to manipulate the private thoughts of anyone they choose? We were told it only works on the weak minded, but that somehow makes it worse. This means they’ve chosen those who are unable to defend themselves to use this dangerous power against. Are they neurosurgeons? They don’t know what lasting effects they’re causing.

8 OBI-WAN HIDES LUKE ON TATOOINE

At the close of Revenge of the Sith, we see how Luke and Leia ended up on opposite ends of the galaxy, never knowing about one another. Senator Organa takes Leia home with him, as he and his wife had already discussed adopting. Yoda, the all-knowing Jedi, suggests taking Luke to Tatooine where he will live with his aunt and uncle.

Really!? That’s your great plan, take him to the planet Anakin grew up on and let the only family he has left raise him. If Vader had known the children lived, that would’ve been the first place he looked. Not only did they leave him in the most obvious place, they didn’t even change his name.

7 VADER GOES TO JEDI HEAVEN

This whole saga starts with the prophecy that Anakin is the one who will bring balance to the Force. The thing about prophecies is, that they always have different meanings. Technically, yes Vader did eventually defeat the Sith and bring balance back to the Force. However, he took the long way around.

In his time as Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker took hundreds of lives personally, millions if you count all those lost on Alderaan. He was a brutal villain, showing no mercy to anyone. With that in mind, it seems weird that Anakin gets to find peace with Yoda and Obi-Wan. We’re sure all his victims have a different interpretation of where his final resting place should be, and how he should spend his afterlife.

6 YODA IS HEARTLESS

Yoda is universally known as the most powerful and wise Jedi of them all. Underneath all the wisdom and experience, he’s also very heartless. When Anakin comes to him to discuss his dreams about losing Padme, Yoda basically tells him not to be sad because she will become one with the Force. Perhaps if he had been more understanding and helpful, we all could have avoided this whole Dark Side take over.

Later, when Luke is training, and figures out his friends are in danger, Yoda wants him to leave them to their fate and keep training. His rationale is that as long as Luke honors what they fought for, losing them is acceptable. Turns out Yoda isn’t a very compassionate teacher.

5 OBI-WAN LEAVES ANAKIN TO SUFFER

The shock of Anakin’s betrayal has a particularly rough effect on Obi-Wan. He began training Anakin when he was a boy. They’re not supposed to get attached, but clearly they have a familial relationship. Now, he must suddenly battle his best friend for control of the galaxy.

The duel itself is epic and takes place across volcanic planet Mustafar. This setting lets us know that this fight will have a gnarly finish. It does end horribly for Anakin, as Obi-Wan dismembers him, then he begins to burn. At this point, you’d think Obi-Wan wouldn’t want to see his friend perish in such a painful way. Except no, he merely takes his lightsaber and walks away. This is pure revenge.

4 POE, FINN AND REY KEEP TELLING PEOPLE ABOUT THE MAP

The Force Awakens opens with Poe on a secret mission to find a map that leads to Luke Skywalker. The information is so important that he hides it in his droid, so the First Order can’t find it. Then, the minute he and Finn meet and are escaping together, Poe tells him all about the map.

How does he know he can trust this guy? All he knows about him is he’s a Stormtrooper who wants off the ship. How does Poe know this isn’t a trap? Later, following Poe’s example, Finn immediately tells Rey about the map, and they of course spill the beans to Han and Chewie. Apparently, this top secret information is the worst kept secret in the galaxy.

3 NO ONE STOPS THE FIRST ORDER FROM RULING THE GALAXY

After an epic battle that consumes the whole galaxy, the Empire is finally defeated and everyone rejoices. The Republic retakes power and democracy is restored... for 30 years. That’s how long it’s taken for the First Order to rise from the ashes of the Empire. At the start of The Force Awakens, the First Order is a fully formed military organization with massive equipment and control of several sections of the galaxy.

As this new evil Empire began building its power, no one thought to stop it while they weren’t as strong? Where did the funding for Starkiller Base come from? Honestly, some of those Rebellion soldiers should have seen the signs and nipped the First Order in the bud.

2 KYLO REN DIGS UP VADER’S BODY

At his core Kylo Ren is a sad little boy, who feels like his parents didn’t love him enough. In his misunderstood state he gravitated to the Dark Side of the Force and the teachings of his grandfather Darth Vader. At one point in The Force Awakens he even has an emotional conversation with Vader’s destroyed helmet.

So, this means, Kylo Ren went to the forest moon of Endor, found where Vader was buried and exhumed him. As if that wasn’t enough, he brought his destroyed helmet back with him, so he could use it as a weird alter to pray. There is not enough therapy in the galaxy to deal with all those issues. It’s just wrong on so many levels.

1 KYLO REN IS NOT GOOD AT USING THE FORCE

When we first meet Kylo Ren, he captures Poe and destroys a village just to get his hands on the map to Luke Skywalker. However, later he is seen throwing a temper tantrum when BB-8 escapes with Rey and Finn. Clearly, he skipped the lesson on staying in control of one’s emotions.

When he finally meets Rey, she turns his mind probe around on him. His lightsaber skills are also not great, as he loses to rookie Rey. Our theory is that Kylo Ren isn’t that powerful, it just seems that way because he lives in a world where no one believes the Force still exists. Once he’s challenged by Rey’s genuine power, his weaknesses are exposed.
