Warning: The following contains spoilers from Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett “Chapter 6: From the Desert Comes a Stranger,” streaming now on Disney+.

It’s odd that Boba Fett has only had a single cameo in the last two episodes of his own Disney+ series. Nevertheless, Star Wars fans have been pleased with the alternative. By focusing on Din Djarin, Luke, Grogu and Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett has drastically improved its ratings since the beginning of the season. “From the Desert Comes a Stranger,” specifically, focused on all things Jedi, as Luke and Grogu took their first steps together as master and apprentice.

After Luke helped Grogu clear his mind from Order 66, the two of them had a classic training sequence. By remixing The Empire Strikes Back, Luke began to expand Grogu’s view of the Force, and together, they worked on the young Jedi’s balance and instincts. While the pair looked like a match made in Star Wars Heaven, Luke went and threw a rancor-sized wrench into everything at the end of the episode. Really, though, it might have all been Ahsoka’s fault.

Luke Skywalker offered Baby Yoda an ultimatum

Anyone familiar with The Mandalorian’s storyline knows that Din Djarin and Grogu have had quite the bond since the very beginning of the series. In fact, it was mildly surprising that Djarin sent Grogu away in the first place. However, as Chapter 6 made exceedingly clear, neither one of them has gotten over their attachment to each other. So, Luke decided to deal with Grogu’s attachment once and for all by offering his Padawan an impossible and undermining dichotomy.

During the episode, Djarin brought a gift for Grogu -- a beskar chainmail shirt. Luke told Grogu that he could have it, but the Jedi Master also showed him Yoda’s old lightsaber. Telling him to choose only one, Luke made it clear that Grogu’s decision would determine the course of his life: Mandalorian or Jedi. The episode ended without Grogu making a choice, but the answer might be fairly obvious.

The sequels specifically portrayed Ben Solo as Luke’s first and most powerful apprentice. Thus, for some reason Grogu was not around during that time period, at least not as one of Luke’s students. Now, something weird could happen, but it sure looks like Grogu will abandon the life of a Jedi and choose to be with Mando. After all, the series’ title is The Mandalorian, not The Jedi.

By forcing Grogu to choose, Luke was repeating the mistakes that doomed the Jedi in the prequels. The Luke from the original trilogy repeatedly put his friends over his training, and arguably, that made him more powerful. However, the Luke here had an entirely different perspective. He was rigid, confining and absolutely against any form of attachment. So, somebody must have influenced his perspective. Luke had been in contact with Yoda and Ben’s ghosts, but they should have seen what happens when attachments were forbidden. So, it must have been some other Jedi teacher.

Unfortunately, Ahsoka -- fan-favorite though she may be -- fits the bill for the person who rigidified Luke’s understanding of the Jedi. Although Ahsoka repeatedly claimed that she wasn’t a Jedi, her worldview and understanding of the Force was still framed by years and years of training under Yoda, Anakin and other powerful Force-users at the Jedi Temple. As such, when she refused to train Grogu, it wasn’t because of his past trauma, it was because of his current attachment to Mando. Not to mention, she saw what happened to Anakin when he became attached to Padme. So, it stands to reason that she wanted to prevent the same thing from happening to Grogu and impressed upon Luke the need to reject attachments. Thus, if Grogu declines the Jedi path, it might be because of how Ahsoka negatively influenced Luke’s view of attachment.

To see Grogu make his decision, watch The Book of Boba Fett’s Season 1 finale, which will stream Feb. 9th on Disney+.
