After months of anticipation, Lucasfilm has finally released the first teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, providing fans with the first official look at Episode IX.
First unveiled at Star Wars Celebration Chicago, the trailer has a vocally enthusiastic fan in The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson, who shared his reaction on Twitter.
I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS and I just melted back into being a happy kid. If you need me I’ll be spending the rest of the day smiling dreamily. https://t.co/z8evIBbRoA— Rian Johnson (@rianjohnson) April 12, 2019
Johnson had written and directed the 2017 Star Wars film, making controversial story decisions including the revelation of Rey's parentage and Kylo Ren shattering his helmet and slaying Supreme Leader Snoke. At the panel, Abrams himself would praise Johnson's decision to cast Kelly Marie Tran in the franchise, though she is not present in the teaser.
Judging by the footage, several of these elements may be revisited or altered, with Kylo creating a new helmet and Rey potentially having a closer link to the Skywalker family than originally believed. Whatever the changes will ultimately be, Johnson appears to enjoy what he has seen so far.
Directed and co-written by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Keri Russell, Anthony Daniels, Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams and Carrie Fisher, with Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant. The film arrives December 20.
