Johnson had written and directed the 2017 Star Wars film, making controversial story decisions including the revelation of Rey's parentage and Kylo Ren shattering his helmet and slaying Supreme Leader Snoke. At the panel, Abrams himself would praise Johnson's decision to cast Kelly Marie Tran in the franchise, though she is not present in the teaser.

Judging by the footage, several of these elements may be revisited or altered, with Kylo creating a new helmet and Rey potentially having a closer link to the Skywalker family than originally believed. Whatever the changes will ultimately be, Johnson appears to enjoy what he has seen so far.
