Luke Skywalker's ending was arguably the most shocking moment of The Last Jedi, but it wasn't the last time Mark Hamill's character would be seen in a Star Wars movie. Luke will also appear in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and now, we have our first look at him in the upcoming movie.

The photo, which was revealed in Vanity Fair's preview of the film, shows Hamill's Luke Skywalker standing next to RD-D2 against a burning, smoking background. It reveals Luke is sporting a bearded and robed look, much like his appearance in The Last Jedi, but it doesn't offer many clues about the character's status.

Star Wars fans have already been speculating about how it's possible for Luke to appear in the movie, as he seemingly died after using the Force to project himself into a battle with Kylo Ren on Crait. The Luke we're seeing now could be a Force Ghost or even just a flashback, but some believe the title of the movie could also hint at him coming back in a more concrete way.

Directed and co-written by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Keri Russell, Matt Smith, Anthony Daniels, Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams and Carrie Fisher, with Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant. The film arrives December 20.
