When John Boyega reprises his role as a reformed Stormtrooper Finn in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, he'll finally be a big deal in the Resistance. The Star Wars actor told Entertainment Weekly that “Finn’s a big deal” in The Last Jedi, riffing off a joke he shared with Harrison Ford's Han Solo in J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

“The funny thing is, between VII and VIII, Finn’s now a big deal! He is now a big deal. Imagine that – you get taken down by Kylo Ren,” Boyega shared. “Think about what the gossip’s going to be like in the Resistance. ‘Oh, that’s the guy that got slashed down by Kylo?’”

Finn suffered a near-fatal injury in The Force Awakens while aiding Rey, Han Solo, Chewbacca and the Resistance against the villainous First Order. He was gravely injured and cast aside after attempting a lightsaber duel with Kylo Ren, who was out hunting Rey in the movie's climax.

The trailer for The Last Jedi offers a glimpse Finn unconscious in a medical pod, recovering from the wounds inflicted by Kylo's crossguard lightsaber. On Finn's recovery, Boyega said, "Finn's in a bad way at the end of VII [The Last Jedi]. He has a lot of issues. He got slashed with a saber, and that took him down real hard, so he's in a coma."

He eventually revealed that his character does wake up. What's more, he'll take part in a separate quest with newcomer Kelly Marie Tran, who plays the Resistance mechanic Rose Tico. "It's Finn and Rose, they're on a massive adventure. It's a big mission they need to complete," he revealed. "The Resistance is under immense pressure, and it's time for them to get a bit of help. That's where Finn and Rose come in, and they're thrust into a crazy adventure."

"There's some additional few things that need to be done to make him mobile. He's definitely in a place where he needs some help," he added. "It's a grounding injury. It's going to take him some time to get back on the ball. But when he does… oh, he does."
