‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Soars to $1.16 Billion Worldwide

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” earned another $31.4 million in North America on Monday and $39.4 million overseas, bringing its domestic total to $571.4 million and an overseas tally of $589.7 million. Its worldwide haul now stands at $1.16 billion.

The Hollywood Reporter notes the Disney sequel will become only the fifth film to cross the $600 million mark in North America, following “Avatar,” “Titanic,” “Jurassic World” and “The Avengers.” In all likelihood, it will surpass “Avatar’s” record $760.5 million domestic total by Sunday.

On the the global stage, “The Force Awakens” overtook “Minions” ($1.157 billion) to become the 10th highest-grossing film of all time, blowing past “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” “Skyfall,” “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King” and “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.”  Now “Iron Man 3” and “Frozen” are in its sights.

As the J.J. Abrams film continues to do blockbuster numbers both domestically and overseas, it’s important to remember “The Force Awakens” won’t open in China until Jan. 9.
