Disney+ has teased a mysterious new location in the Star Wars galaxy in the first set photo for the upcoming series The Acolyte.

The image features lead actors Amandla Stenberg (The Hate U Give) and Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game) and was released by the streamer to announce that production had commenced on the upcoming Star Wars series. An official series description for The Acolyte was also released, revealing that the mystery-thriller series "will take viewers into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark-side powers in the final days of the High Republic era [as a] former Padawan reunites with her Jedi Master to investigate a series of crimes[.]" However, "the forces they confront are more sinister than they ever anticipated."

Joining Stenberg and Lee are Manny Jacinto (The Good Place), Dafne Keen (His Dark Materials), Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim), Rebecca Henderson (Inventing Anna), Charlie Barnett (Russian Doll), Dean-Charles Chapman (1917) and Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix). Lucasfilm has not announced at this time who any of the actors will be playing in The Acolyte.

Created by Leslye Headland, The Acolyte is currently filming at Shinfield Studios in Berkshire, United Kingdom. In addition to serving as showrunner and executive producer on the series, Headland will also direct the series pilot. It is currently unknown who will direct the remaining seven episodes of the series, although Loki's Kate Herron is reportedly on board to direct an undisclosed number of episodes.

The Acolyte Will Get Political

While plot details are still scarce for the upcoming series, Headland has teased that The Acolyte will explore the wider circumstances that led to the state of the galaxy in The Phantom Menace. "We're taking a look at the political and personal and spiritual things that came up in a time period that we don't know much about," she said in May 2022. "Well, how did things get to this point? How did we get to a point where a Sith lord can infiltrate the Senate and none of the Jedi pick up on it? Like, what went wrong? What are the scenarios that led us to this moment?"

The Acolyte is one of three Star Wars series currently in production at Lucasfilm. Ahsoka, which began filming in May 2022, stars Rosario Dawson as the title character. The upcoming live-action series will serve as a loose continuation of Star Wars Rebels, with many characters from the series set to appear in Ahsoka. Skeleton Crew, an Amblin-inspired coming-of-age galactic adventure starring Jude Law, is also in production, with filming having commenced in July 2022. Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew will release on Disney+ in 2023 alongside the third season of The Mandalorian, which is currently in post-production.

The Acolyte does not yet have a release date but will also stream exclusively on Disney+.
