Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi will direct and co-write a new Star Wars film.

StarWars.com announced the news on May the 4, while also announcing a new Star Wars television show is heading to Disney+ by writer Leslye Headland (Russian Doll). Working with Waititi on the screenplay for his Star Wars film is Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917, Last Night in Soho). She received a BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film of the Year for 1917.

Reports of Waititi being approached to helm a Star Wars movie first popped up in January. The Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit director also helmed the Season 1 finale of Disney+'s breakout series, The Mandalorian, which has already been renewed for a Season 2. The Star Wars original Disney+ series is reportedly already working on Season 3.

Waititi pumped the brakes on his Star Wars rumors in February when he attended the pre-Academy Awards luncheon, where he was interviewed about his Oscar-nominated film Jojo Rabbit. "Listen, what does 'approach' even mean?" he said. "I've seen Star Wars, that's about as far as it goes."

A release date for Taika Waititi's Star Wars movie will come at a later date.
