The Star Wars saga is primarily a conflict between the Light and Dark sides of the Force, and the ways of the Jedi Order and the Sith Lords alike must be passed on to a new generation to keep up the eternal struggle. Jedi Masters and Sith Lords are always looking for talented apprentices who can learn the ways of the Force, and these students are usually quite loyal.

Some students turned out better than others, and some master/apprentice relationships were rather distant when compared to others. By contrast, some apprentices were greatly loyal to their masters both out of duty and personal interest, and these students and masters make a solid team against their foes.

10 Darth Sidious & Kylo Ren Never Really Got Along

Emperor Palpatine Kylo Ren feature

This master/apprentice relationship formed early in The Rise of Skywalker, but it did not last long. Kylo Ren had lost his original master, the chilling Supreme Leader Snoke, and he needed a new master to coach him in the ways of the Dark Side. So, he journeyed to the world of Exegol and met a certain Darth Sidious.

Sidious promised to give Kylo Ren "everything," but it didn't turn out that way. Before long, Kylo lost to Rey for the final time, and he and Rey later became a united front aginst Sidious. Besides, Sidious was more interested in Rey than anything else.

9 Darth Sidious Only Saw Darth Maul As A Useful Warrior

Darth Sidious appreciated Darth Maul's warrior talents, but their master/apprentice relationship didn't go much deeper than that. It was mostly one-sided, since Sidious was simply keeping Maul around as a placeholder until he could find a more suitable apprentice to the Dark Side.

Maul was much more loyal to Sidious, viewing him as the ultimate enabler for his bloodthirsty ways. That, and Maul recognized how powerful Sidious was, and didn't dare defy him. He was happy to serve.

8 Darth Sidious Saw Much Potential In Count Dooku/Darth Tyranus

Many of the weakest master/apprentice relationships involve Darth Sidious, and that's not a coincidence. Sidious is incredibly self-centered and ambitious, and sees everyone, friend and foe alike, as pawns for his schemes. And he will eventually dispose of them as such.

Still, Darth Sidious clearly had respect for Count Dooku, whom he dubbed Darth Tyranus. Dooku was smarter than Maul and more loyal than Kylo Ren, and Dooku played a key role in the great Clone Wars. Sidious made sure to keep him comfortable and safe the entire time.

7 Kylo Ren Hoped That Snoke Could Give Him Purpose

Supreme Leader Snoke was ultimately a puppet of Sidious, but Kylo Ren didn't know that at the time. Instead, Kylo Ren saw Snoke as the galaxy's top Force expert, and dearly hoped that Snoke could show him his destiny. Kylo Ren even murdered his father, Han Solo, for the sake of this quest.

Snoke greatly respected Kylo Ren's talents, but he also scorned Kylo's lingering feelings for his parents, Han and Leia Solo. Later in The Last Jedi, Snoke prepared to take on Rey as his new apprentice— if Rey was willing to turn. She wasn't, and she and Kylo both dispatched Snoke and his guard.

6 Yoda Taught Luke Much But Wasn't His Dearest Friend

Yoda was the greatest Master of the Jedi Order in the Republic era, and after the rise of the Galactic Empire, Yoda went into hiding on Dagobah. Around 20 years later, Luke Skywalker met him, and began the next phase of his Jedi training.

Yoda and Luke clashed at first, but Luke soon learned to respect Yoda and his great wisdom. A few years later, Luke watched in quiet dismay as Yoda died, but they weren't exactly best friends. Instead, Luke had Han, Chewie and the others in his circle of friends.

5 Rey Learned From Luke & Defended Him Against Ben Solo's Actions

During The Last Jedi, Rey underwent the first major phase of her training with the reclusive master Luke Skywalker, though she had to talk him into it first. Luke taught her some basics of the Force, and Rey also learned from Kylo Ren about the night Luke had tried to assassinate a young Ben Solo.

Rey was on Luke's side, however. She insisted that Ben Solo had failed Luke, not the other way around, and she would help Luke turn Ben Solo back to the Light Side, no matter what. Luke had faith in her, though he didn't like how reckless and impatient Rey was. This was the next generation of the Yoda/Luke dynamic.

4 Darth Sidious Worked Hard To Get Darth Vader On His Side

Darth Sidious put a lot of effort and planning into turning a young Anakin Skywalker to the Dark Side of the Force, and convinced Anakin that only Sidious could help him save Padmé Amidala's life. Padmé died anyway, but Anakin was already committed, so he remained loyal to Sidious, despite his grief.

Vader continued to serve Sidious throughout the Empire's reign, mostly because he had no other option. He fought many battles for Sidious' sake, and even brought his son Luke before the Emperor out of duty. In the end, though, Vader redeemed himself and turned on the Emperor to save his son's life.

3 Obi-Wan Was Never Seen Without Qui-Gon Jinn By His Side

Obi-Wan & Qui Gon

Qui-Gon Jinn was a quintessential Jedi Master, a wise and patient man who will fight to defend others and never to take lives. Obi-Wan Kenobi was a deeply faithful apprentice of Qui-Gon's, and the two of them made a great team during the battle for the besieged Naboo.

Qui-Gon, in turn, thought highly of his apprentice and entrusted Anakin to Obi-Wan's care in the end. Qui-Gon died before he could train Anakin, but Obi-Wan can handle it just fine, so Qui-Gon died without regret.

2 Luke Skywalker Saw Obi-Wan As A Father Figure

Luke didn't often meet Obi-Wan face to face, but he knew who "old Ben" was, and he thought highly of that old hermit. When they crossed paths again in 0 BBY, Luke learned the truth of the Jedi from Obi-Wan, and was grateful to learn about his mysterious father.

Obi-Wan gave Luke what he wanted: his true destiny, and a ticket off the miserable world of Tatooine, not to mention some elementary Jedi training. Luke was heartbroken when Obi-Wan gave his life aboard the Death Star, but it had to be done. Years later, Luke would consult Obi-Wan's Force ghost on Dagobah, and learn even more.

1 For Years, Anakin & Obi-Wan Were Like Brothers

Tragically, these two Jedi became bitter enemies when they clashed on Mustafar, and Anakin finished the job aboard the Death Star nearly 20 years later. Until then, Obi-Wan and Anakin were very close, trusting each other with their lives. Obi-Wan grew much closer to Anakin than he did Qui-Gon, in fact.

These two shared many adventures together, and they even have running jokes and the like, showing what great friends they were. It's unlikely that any Jedi master and apprentice duo were as close as Anakin and Obi-Wan during their heyday.
