With so many characters in the Star Wars universe, there are bound to be a few match-ups that don’t please all the fans. Some of these romantics pairings are just downright strange. There are often cases where characters are a clear match with somebody else, but the creators inexplicably decided to go another path.

For some, relationships that may have made sense in the moment become ridiculous when new information comes to light. And for others, their relationships frankly just do not make sense. In such a huge galaxy, it’s fine to date around, but a few of these strange pairings were clearly not endgame in the Star Wars universe.

10 Han Solo And Qi’ra

qi'ra from the movie solo

In creating a solo movie for Han Solo in Solo, the franchise introduced a different love interest for the titular character. However, Han Solo already has his great romance in the Star Wars universe in Leia Organa, who, in some timelines, does marry him and become Leia Organa Solo. In trying to introduce Qi’ra as a romantic interest and not just Han’s friend, fans felt strange, as they could never fully commit to her as Han’s romance. It was inevitable that Han would leave her behind and eventually end up with Leia, so it was odd to see Han paired up with Qi’ra at all.

9 Lando Calrissian And L3-37

l3-37 talking in Solo: A Star Wars Story

Many assumed that Han Solo and Lando Calrissian had a relationship in their past, but Solo didn’t prove this theory for those fans. Instead, Han Solo was in a relationship with Qi’ra, and Lando Calrissian is in a relationship with L3-37. As her name suggests, L3-37 is a droid, and the two of them seemingly have feelings for one another.

After she sacrifices herself, her entire “brain,” as it were, is uploaded onto the computers of the Millennium Falcon, giving that ship a worth beyond any that Han Solo knew it to have. In a way, Lando is in a relationship with the Millennium Falcon — and he loses her in a bet, which is also, in its own way, very, very strange.

8 Chewbacca And Mallatobuck

Chewbacca and Mallatobuck in the Star Wars Holiday Special.

The Star Wars Holiday Special from 1978 is not particularly good, but it does contribute some interesting lore to the Star Wars canon. In this special, Chewbacca’s entire family is introduced, including his wife, Mallatobuck. He also has a son, Lumpawarrump, and a father, Attichitcuk, and this family never appears in the Star Wars canon again. Chewbacca is Han Solo’s partner in crime, but he also doesn’t seem to have many close bonds beyond Han, and he doesn’t strike anyone as a particularly romantic figure. The fact that he not only has a wife, but a son, is strange to many viewers.

7 Rey And Kylo Ren

Kylo Ren interrogates Rei in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens

Some fans wanted Rey and Kylo Ren to get together in the end, while many others didn't. As Kylo Ren tried to redeem himself, turning back to Ben Solo in his last moments much like Darth Vader turned back to Anakin Skywalker in his, Rey saw the goodness in him.

In this moment, she chose to kiss him, which was jarring for audiences and seemed to be an odd move for her as a character. Their dynamic was always strange, as Kylo Ren tortured Rey as soon as they first met, and they never really connected beyond their Force dyad.

6 Luke Skywalker And Leia Organa

luke and leia kiss in the empire strikes back

Likely before George Lucas decided that Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa were going to be revealed as secret siblings, the two of them almost pursued a romantic relationship. Luke is seen jealous of Han and Leia, and the two of them even share a kiss after Luke recovers from his attack. It seems like they’re flirting and might be working towards something, which is unendingly strange, especially now that fans know the two of them are twins who once shared a womb. Some fans have recently chosen to reason Luke’s jealousy as him being jealous because he likes Han, not Leia, which is definitely a better option than Luke and Leia together.

5 Finn And Rose Tico

Rose Tico and Finn Kiss in Star Wars: The Last Jedi

After Episode VII — The Force Awakens came out, fans were excited at the prospect that Finn and Poe Dameron might end up together. They had obvious chemistry, and, because Poe was meant to die in earlier versions of the movie, his character was freed up for the rest of the saga. However, when Rose Tico was introduced in Episode VIII — The Last Jedi, it was clear she was meant to clear that relationship up. While Rose Tico herself is an awesome character who deserved much better than she got in the franchise, it is certainly strange that she was shoehorned in with Finn. Both of the characters would have done much better if they had never been forced together romantically like this.

4 Anakin Skywalker And Padmé Amidala

anakin and padme get married

When Anakin Skywalker was introduced to the Star Wars universe, he was only a child. This made their romantic relationship as Anakin grew up all the stranger. While Anakin rapidly seemed to age into an adult, Padmé barely changed, but she still entered into a romantic relationship with him.

More than that, the two of them were deeply in love, despite the fact that their romance was forced every step of the way. When Padmé dies, it’s simply because she has lost the will to live after all Anakin has done, which is just an unfortunate end to a wonderful life. Their romance stunts Padmé’s character and doesn’t make total sense, considering that they met when Anakin was only a little boy.

3 Din Djarin And Cara Dune

cara dune from the mandalorian

With the introduction of The Mandalorian, Din Djarin, who gives the title to the popular Disney+ show The Mandalorian, many fans were waiting to see if he would have any romantic interests. As it turned out, the show tried to force together Cara Dune and Din Djarin. It seemed that this romance might actually be going somewhere, but the actress, Gina Carano, may not be appearing in the show much longer. In the end, it was weird for Din Djarin to be paired up with anyone, and he and Cara Dune are almost certainly better off just staying friends. If Din ever ends up with anybody, it will have to be somebody the show builds up to after a while.

2 Jar Jar Binks And Queen Julia of Bardotta

jar jar binks and queen julia share a kiss

If audiences were asked who they would least like to see enter a romantic relationship, they would probably say Jar Jar Binks. Despite this, The Clone Wars gives Jar Jar a brief romance with Queen Julia of Bardotta. In the episodes Queen Julia appears in, she gets kidnapped, and then needs to be saved. For some reason, she decides to kiss Jar Jar Binks, which is just hard for many people to see. In fact, this strange romance was received so poorly that the creators never pursued it, and Queen Julia is never brought up in relation to Jar Jar again.

1 Palpatine And Whoever He Ended Up With

rey on the far right faces off against a dark mass on the left

One of the most shocking turns in the entire Skywalker Saga is that Rey was revealed to be the grandchild of Palpatine. In a way, Anakin was born of Palpatine, but Rey’s backstory seems to indicate that Palpatine was with someone directly, had a child with them, and began raising that child. The strangest and most inexplicable romance in all of Star Wars is almost certainly Palpatine and whoever that poor soul was, as he is the last person anybody would probably want to be romantically involved with.
