Fans of pop culture take great pride in keeping up with years of continuity, and that's no different for the Star Wars franchise. After Disney purchased the Star Wars license, hundreds of comic storylines and novels -- often referred to as the Expanded Universe -- were no longer canon.Lucasfilm Story Group Creative Executive Matt Martin responded to a fan question on Twitter regarding canon vs. non-canon, theoretically telling all fans to chill out because "It’s all fake anyway so you can choose to accept whatever you want as part of the story."RELATED: Why Star Wars Fan Theories Are Often More In-Depth Than The Films Are

"So to summarize: there is a reason that we need to internally know what is and isn’t canon so we can keep our line of official storytelling as aligned as possible but that doesn’t mean fans can’t individually pick and choose what they want to accept as true," Martin said before dropping the "fake" bombshell.

In an earlier set of tweets, Martin explained how fans have the ability to pick and choose which stories they want to read and enjoy, so they shouldn't worry about a particular story still being canon. Plus, not being beholden to canon allows creators more creativity to tell their own unique stories. Of course, some fans will disagree with Martin's statements, but his thoughts will surely lead to more discourse among the Star Wars fandom.
