The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: Shadow of the Sith, on sale now.

One of the most anticipated aspects of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was the truth behind Rey's history. Once Emperor Palpatine was confirmed to return, fans speculated Rey would connect to him and his innate lust for power and control. The movie eventually revealed her dad was one of Palpatine's rejected clones, making her the Emperor's "granddaughter" and a tool he wanted to use to rule the galaxy. In addition, fans finally witnessed how her parents got killed by the shady Ochi of Bestoon, confirming how the secret of Rey being on Jakku died with them. However, come Adam Christopher's Star Wars: Shadow of the Sith novel, Rey's origin changes, resulting in a plot hole.

In The Rise of Skywalker, Rey's parents rushed into Unkar Plutt's tent, begging her to be brave and promising she'd be safe. It seemed someone was hot on their heels, leaving them in a frenzy. As such, they sped off in a ship, leaving Unkar holding Rey's hand. The film then hinted that Unkar quickly hid the girl away to avoid her getting found by Ochi.

However, in Shadow of the Sith, Rey's parents weren't in that big a rush. In fact, they didn't just drop her off at Unkar's place and speed off. There was actually a business transaction in between, with Unkar being a guardian that Rey's mom, Miramir, sought out. Her dad, Dathan, was suspicious due to Unkar's seedy ways, but eventually, they brokered a business deal, offering him an amulet to keep watch over the girl. That explains why he took the job, turning the trade into something more diplomatic.

But the plot hole created stems from Rey's memory. The Sequels made it seem like Rey didn't spend much time with her parents or was too young to remember anything. It felt like a blank canvas, with Rey getting chucked from a happy home into Unkar's stead. But the book had Rey with her parents avoiding firefights, escaping Ochi's hunters after initially leaving Jakku and tiptoeing around the galaxy to avoid getting caught.

Through it all, Rey's parents kept reassuring her she'd be fine, but at this point, the girl had an idea she was special. And given how smart the six-year-old was, inheriting her mom's genius for engineering, it's just tough to see her having muddied memories over returning to Jakku and being left with Unkar. In addition, Unkar offered Miramir beads from Pasaana to throw Ochi off if he caught them. He knew it'd send the hunter there, so Unkar could also have let Rey in on how Pasaana got involved with her missing kin.

Rey knew he helped them escape, so questioning him, even after meeting Finn and Poe, would confirm they were trying to shake someone off their tail and sent the heroes to Pasaana way earlier. Ultimately, from this adventure charted by Christopher, there's a lot of fodder that should have clued Rey in on her destiny and that her family was fugitives. Instead, the movie had her ignore Unkar when his intel may have helped her unlock her past and future.
