Lock S-Foils in attack position because Rogue Squadron is the next Star Wars movie due to hit theaters. Following the tepid audience response to Solo and The Rise of Skywalker, then-Disney CEO Bob Iger put Star Wars films on hiatus as Lucasfilm shifted its focus to television. The brand has flourished on Disney+ with The Mandalorian and The Bad Batch, but now Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins is standing by to usher in the next generation of Star Wars movies.

At Disney's Investor Day event in December 2020, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy announced a plethora of brand new Star Wars projects, the majority of which will occupy the television space. Taika Waititi signed on to write and direct a Star Wars film, and rumors abound about Kevin Feige producing one as well, but next to nothing is known about these movies. Of the film projects discussed, Rogue Squadron is by far the most concrete. Here's everything we know so far about the project, including its plot, release date, and trailer.

What Is Rogue Squadron's Plot?

Rogue Squadron is the name of the Rebel Alliance's elite starfighter squadron, first seen in the Battle of Hoth, that formed after the decimation of Red Squadron in the Battle of Yavin. Luke Skywalker and Wedge Antilles founded the group and named it after Jyn Erso and the rebels from Rogue One that sacrificed their lives procuring the Death Star plans.

In a teaser released last year, Jenkins shared that Rogue Squadron connected with her on such a personal level because it marries two things she loves deeply: Star Wars and fighter pilots. Jenkins recalled vivid childhood memories watching her father, an Air Force Captain, roar across the sky with his squadron in F4 fighter planes. Tragically, Jenkins' father died in service of his country, but this inspired the director to make the greatest fighter pilot movie of all time. On the official Star Wars website, a press release states that "The story will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy."

Author Michael Stackpole famously wrote about the exploits of Rogue Squadron in now-defunct Expanded Universe novels and comic books, most notably in the X-Wing novel series. Rogue Squadron was further enshrined in a beloved video game trilogy for Nintendo systems beginning in 1998. Although Jenkins said she aims to honor those Star Wars Legends projects, she also revealed her Rogue Squadron movie tells an original story that isn't adapted from any previous media.

When Does Rogue Squadron Take Place?

Wedge Antilles Star Wars

While it's unknown when Rogue Squadron takes place in the Star Wars chronology, the film's logo features a T-65B X-Wing, indicating it may unfold during the Galactic Civil War of the original Star Wars trilogy, as opposed to focusing on Resistance fighters from the sequel trilogy. Then again, the movie's synopsis references "a new generation" and "the future era," so it could realistically take place any time after The Empire Strikes Back. Denis Lawson's Wedge Antilles made a surprise appearance during The Rise of Skywalker, so it's possible the ace pilot could return to act as a mentor figure to these newer characters, assuming Rogue Squadron takes place closer to the events of the sequel trilogy.
