Darth Revan is one of the most prominent, unique and popular Sith lords in Star Wars Legends. And since Disney purchased the rights to a galaxy far, far away, fans have been clamoring for Revan to be brought back into canon alongside The Knights of the Old Republic video game series, in which he features prominently.

Well, it seems that that persistence has started to pay off. While no one was paying attention, Star Wars gave a quiet nod to the fan-favorite character in a strange place -- The Rise of Skywalker Visual Dictionary -- and brought him back into modern canon.

In Legends, Darth Revan was originally a Jedi. But after he and his apprentice, Darth Malak, won the Mandalorian Wars, they disappeared into the Unknown Regions. There they were captured and influenced by the Sith Emperor Darth Vitiate, but eventually broke from his thrall, and rather than serve him, decided to wage war against the Jedi. During this conflict, Revan was redeemed to the light, where, years later, he tried to confront Vitiate, only to be betrayed and imprisoned.

During his time in prison, his mind splinted which, when he died, caused his spirit to split into separate Jedi and Sith personalities. After more fighting, a team of Imperial and Republic troops was able to ally themselves with his Jedi Spirit and cause it to unify once again. Eventually, his spirit was able to play a significant role in the ultimate defeat of the Sith Emperor. This is the Legends character that fans want to return: the mask-wearing, purple lightsaber-wielding, simultaneous Sith and Jedi. Before The Rise of Skywalker, Disney had ignored that wish, but now, Revan's story has been teased in modern canon.

After much anticipation, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker revealed that Darth Sidious had survived his fall down the famous reactor shaft and begun to take over the galaxy yet again using the First Order. As the movie progressed, Sidious explained that the Sith cultists on Exogul had been hard at work building him an army of red-clad Sith Troopers and a heavily-armed armada called the Final Order.

As stated in the visual dictionary, each Legion of the army was identified by number, and more significantly, a name of Sith importance, including Revan, Andeddu, Tanis, Tenebrous, Phobos and Desolous. Each name holds countless stories behind it, but, as the book explains, “this history was hidden from the rest of the galaxy, only the Sith Eternal cultists know the significance of these names.” What that boils down to is that, for now, fans will just have to be satisfied with the fact that these Sith are a part of official canon, at least in name.

Nevertheless, Revan enthusiasts shouldn't be discouraged, as this is not the first time the mask-wearing character has nearly been brought back into the fold. Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 3, Episode 17, “Ghosts of Mortis,” nearly showed Darth Revan, along with Darth Bane, as Force Ghosts on the nexus world of Mortis. That idea was eventually scrapped, but it, and the revelation in The Rise of Skywalker Visual Dictionary, proves Disney and Lucasfilm are making an effort to return Legends Sith Lords, including Revan, to their former glory.
