The Rise of Skywalker had a surprisingly strong opening day given the film's divisiveness, edging out all but two other Star Wars films.
According to the latest box office numbers from Deadline, The Rise of Skywalker currently sits at $90.2 million domestically. That gives it the sixth-best opening day ever, and puts it just behind The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi for biggest opening day for a Star Wars film.
The opening day record puts The Rise of Skywalker not only behind the two previous films in the Sequel Trilogy but Avengers: Endgame and Infinity as well, and it's just $1 million shy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. Worldwide, the J.J. Abrams-helmed film has pulled in $193.7 million.
Also debuting this week were Cats and Bombshell. The former has had a disappointing opening for such a marquee production, pulling in only $7.6 million and falling in fourth place behind Jumanji: Next Level and Frozen 2. Bombshell, meanwhile, nabbed sixth place with $5.8 million.
The numbers for the latest Star Wars film follow the trend set Thursday, when Rise of Skywalker brought in $40 million, falling behind both of its predecessors in the final trilogy in the Skywalker Saga.
Directed and co-written by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Keri Russell, Anthony Daniels, Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams, and Carrie Fisher, with Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant. The film is now in theaters.
