Chris Terrio, co-writer of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, says none of Colin Trevorrow's original Episode IX script made into the movie's final cut.

While each entry of the sequel trilogy was supposed to be helmed by a different director, differences between Trevorrow and Disney saw him replaced by The Force Awakens' J.J. Abrams for The Rise of Skywalker. However, as Terrio explained to The Wrap, "We are both a little superstitious about starting with material that might lead us in a direction that’s different than the one we might’ve gone in naturally."

"We didn’t begin with the previous script, there may have been certain elements that we used that had been in the original script and we weren’t aware of it," he added regarding where they wanted the story to go following the cliffhanger ending of The Last Jedi.

Although both Trevorrow and co-writer Derek Connolly ended up with a story credit on Episode IX, any similarities are a coincidence. In fact, Terrio explained the duo only receive credit due to rules put in place by the Writer's Guild of America, saying, "The [WGA] makes the determination about those things." However, he reiterated the move to wipe the slate clean didn't come from a place of malice. "We didn’t have a bad relationship to Colin’s material," he said. "We just didn’t start with it. It’s not a juicy story of intrigue or anything."
