Many of the events that took place in the 30 years between Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens are still shrouded in mystery. One pivotal moment involves Luke Skywalker’s failure to rebuild a Jedi Order after the fall of the Empire. We have seen a few details of the destruction of the Jedi Temple in The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, but the full story has not been told, and almost nothing is known about Luke’s other students. However, that is about to change.

In a preview of Marvel's Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren #1, which goes on sale Dec. 18, we get our first glimpse at the immediate aftermath of Ben Solo's actions through the eyes of his fellow students, who had been off-planet during the massacre.

The issue, by writer Charles Soule and artist Will Sliney, opens with the Jedi Temple in flames and a stoic Ben Solo watching it burn. Three students arrive in a ship, shocked by the devastation. They're informed by Ben that Luke tried to kill him in his sleep, and now he’s dead.

One of the students, Voe, doesn’t believe him; she says insists Luke would never attack his students. When she begins to assert that Ben could never overtake Luke, the future Kylo Ren interrupts and proclaims he is stronger than the three of them put together. He boasts he was the prized student of the temple and is even stronger than Luke.

Storytelling gaps are nothing new in Star Wars. We didn’t know how the Empire came to power, what the Clone Wars were or how Anakin turned to the Dark Side until the answers were provided by subsequent films, television series, novels or comics. The same is true with central questions raised in the sequel trilogy, such as Rey’s parentage, and what happened really occurred between Luke and Ben.

Han Solo said Luke tried to train new Jedi, but one student turned against him and destroyed everything. In The Last Jedi, we learn Luke had been so troubled by the darkness growing in his nephew that he considered killing him in his sleep. Through flashback, we see Ben waking up to find Luke standing over him with his weapon. Although the moment had passed for Luke, Ben viewed it as an attack, and the damage was done. The incident serves as the catalyst for Ben becoming Kylo Ren and Luke going into exile.

Kylo Ren’s occasional outbursts of unbridled rage, and continued struggle between the light and dark sides in the filmsm should provide fertile ground for strong storytelling in other mediums as well.

Star Wars: The Rise of Kylo Ren #1 goes on sale on Jan. 18.
