Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson apparently saw Rey and Kylo Ren as more of an item than they wound up being in the sequel trilogy.

"If anybody questions whether or not Reylo were meant to be romantic, you can stop speculating," author Sariah Wilson tweeted after speaking with Johnson. "Rian absolutely saw them as a romance. I mean, there was more to their stories and growth and arcs, but he saw them as romantic and intimate."

In The Last Jedi, Supreme Leader Snoke established a connection between Rey and Kylo that allowed them to communicate and even see one another via the Force (fans have since dubbed this feat ForceTime as a nod to FaceTime). Their connection seemingly laid the groundwork for a romance to blossom in The Rise of Skywalker, and Reylo shippers were elated when the two shared a kiss just moments before the redeemed Ben Solo became one with the Force. However, in the novelization of The Rise of Skywalker by Rae Carson, it was confirmed that the kiss wasn't romantic in nature. Instead, it was implied that the kiss was one of friendship.

"His heart was full as Rey reached for his face, let her fingers linger against his cheek," the novel reads. "And then, wonder of wonders, she leaned forward and kissed him. A kiss of gratitude, acknowledgment of their connection, celebration that they'd found each other at last."

While Johnson wasn't the one to helm the follow-up to The Last Jedi, it was announced just before the release of that film that he'd been tapped to develop a new Star Wars trilogy. The status of this project has been the subject of debate in the years since then, as little information has been revealed, but Johnson recently confirmed the trilogy is still in the cards, though there are no set dates.

In the meantime, Star Wars fans will have plenty of shows on Disney+ to hold them over, but they'll have to wait until 2023 before the next big-screen project, which is Rogue Squadron.

Directed by Patty Jenkins, Rogue Squadron arrives in theaters Dec. 22, 2023.
