News of Ridley's return came as part of Lucasfilm's announcement of a new series of Star Wars movies spanning 5,000 years. Academy Award-winning documentarian Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is set to direct Ridley's installment from a script by Peaky Blinders creator and Academy Award nominee Steven Knight, whose other writing credits include Dirty Pretty Things, Eastern Promises and Locke. Knight joined the project, which is set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, following Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson's departure in March. According to Obaid-Chinoy, the film "will tell the story of rebuilding the new Jedi order."

Driver Is Open to Returning

It is currently unknown if Driver will be involved in Rey's new adventure, but the actor has expressed interest in reprising his role as Ben Solo. "I'm totally not against it," he said in 2021. "For me, it's a filmmaker's medium, so my only thing is working with great filmmakers. Whatever the size… it's never been interesting to me, to an extent. There's interesting things about working on both. I always just follow people I'd be interested in working with, and whether I'd be right for the part -- things like that. No, definitely not averse."

James Mangold and Dave Filoni's Star Wars Films

In addition to Obaid-Chinoy's film, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy also announced two other Star Wars features -- one from director James Mangold and another to be helmed by longtime Star Wars creative Dave Filoni. Mangold's film. Dawn of the Jedi will explore the origins of the iconic galactic peacekeepers and the Force as a whole, with Mangold describing it as a "Biblical epic" in the vein of The Ten Commandments. Meanwhile, Filoni's film will occur during The New Republic era and function as a crossover for The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka. These new entries also come with Lucasfilm's revised Star Wars timeline, which now includes two new eras: Dawn of the Jedi and New Jedi Order.

Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi is slated for a December 2025 release. Filoni and Obaid-Chinoy's films are still in development and remain undated.
