At least one Star Wars film has hit theaters every year since the franchise relaunched with 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Since then, Disney has steadily announced more and more films set in the galaxy far, far away. However, Disney CEO Bob Iger has now indicated the franchise's release schedule will slow down following the release of Episode IX in 2019.

"I made the timing decision, and as I look back, I think the mistake that I made — I take the blame — was a little too much, too fast," Iger told The Hollywood Reporter. "You can expect some slowdown, but that doesn't mean we're not gonna make films. J.J. [Abrams] is busy making [Episode] IX. We have creative entities, including [Game of Thrones creators David] Benioff and [D.B.] Weiss, who are developing sagas of their own, which we haven't been specific about. And we are just at the point where we're gonna start making decisions about what comes next after J.J.'s. But I think we're gonna be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that."

Iger's statement follows a disappointing run for Solo: A Star Wars Story, which may have actually lost money for Disney. Following Solo's lacklustre release, there were reports that plans for new Star Wars anthology films were being put on hold. However, another report released shortly after contradicted that initial report, claiming Lucasfilm and Disney were still working on Star Wars standalone films.

In addition to Benioff and Weiss' upcoming series of Star Wars films, Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson will head up a trilogy of his own, while Iron Man director Jon Favreau is currently working on a live-action Star Wars television series. It's unclear from Iger's statements exactly how these different projects will be affected by the slowdown.
