WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for the series finale of Star Wars Rebels, “Family Reunion and Farewell,” which debuted Monday night on Disney XD.
Star Wars Rebels concluded its four-season run Monday with a moving epilogue that brings most of the remaining key characters past the events of 1983's Return of the Jedi, and the fall of the Galactic Empire, and may provide clues to the franchise's next animated series. But it also seems to confirm a popular fan theory about the beloved Clone Wars veteran, Captain Rex.
In her closing narration, sometime after the Battle of Endor, Sabine Wren reveals the post-war statuses of Hera, and Zeb and Kallus, before leaving Lothal with Ahsoka Tano in search of Ezra Bridger, who disappeared into hyperspace while securing the planet's freedom. Although The Ghost was spotted at the Battle of Scarif in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, it turns out General Syndulla also participated in the pivotal Battle of Endor, along with ... Rex. So, yes, that likely means your Nik Sant theory is now canon.
For those who aren't well versed in fan theories, the reintroduction of The Clone Wars character Rex, complete with white beard and mustache, in the second season of Star Wars Rebels spurred speculation that he's the similarly hirsute Rebel scout who accompanies Han, Leia and Luke to Endor in Return of the Jedi. That previously anonymous Rebel was named Nik Sant, or "Gramps," in the Extended Universe/Legends.
Star Wars Rebels co-creator Dave Filoni readily added fuel to those theories last year at Star Wars Celebration, when he revealed concept art of Rex in camouflage fatigues similar to those worn by the Endor strike team. Joining in the joke, Lucasfilm Story Group executive Pablo Hidalgo said, “Just speculate away, we’re putting it out there.”
Sabine's recollection that Rex participated with Hera in the Battle of Endor is probably the closest we're going to come to official confirmation that the Clone Wars veteran is indeed Nik Sant. But that's good enough for us.
Available to stream on Disney XD platforms, Star Wars Rebels stars Freddie Prinze Jr. as Kanan, Vanessa Marshall as Hera, Steve Blum as Zeb, Tiya Sircar as Sabine, Taylor Gray as Ezra, Dee Bradley Baker as Captain Rex, David Oyelowo as Kallus, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn as Governor Pryce, Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn and Warwick Davis as Rukh.
