Rangers of the New Republic is one of many upcoming new series on Disney+, and The Mandalorian co-showrunner Jon Favreau has provided some insight regarding when the show takes place in Star Wars continuity.

"All of them take place in a similar timeline, which is right after Return of the Jedi," Favreau said Monday on Good Morning America.

The Mandalorian takes place roughly five years after the events of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, meaning that Rangers of the New Republic will predate that series. In the 1983 film, the Rebel Alliance -- who becomes the New Republic -- destroyed the second Death Star after Darth Vader killed Emperor Palpatine to save the life of his son, Luke Skywalker. Palpatine was later shown to have been resurrected in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

As seen in The Mandalorian, though, remnants of the Galactic Empire are still active and causing quite a bit of trouble, even five years after its defeat. Moff Gideon, played by Giancarlo Esposito, in fact had continued to command an army and even oversaw the construction of a squadron of automated dark troopers. Gideon, however, is defeated by the combined efforts of The Mandalorian's allies, with some unexpected aid from Luke himself, in a surprise appearance.

In the immediate aftermath of Palpatine's apparent death in Return of the Jedi, it's likely that the Empire's forces are still otherwise largely intact, portending an equally likely source of ongoing conflict for storylines in Rangers of the New Republic.

Many have speculated that the series could focus on Cara Dune, former Rebel shock trooper turned New Republic marshal on Nevarro. Dune, played by Gina Carano, is a survivor from the planet Alderaan who allies herself with The Mandalorian in various missions, including taking down Moff Gideon's Imperial forces. Dune was offered the job of marshal by New Republic pilot Carson Teva after ridding Nevarro of its remaining Imperial presence. Teva, played by Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, is also rumored to be featured in the upcoming series.

Rangers of the New Republic, along with other Star Wars spinoff series such as Ahsoka, Lando and Andor, was announced by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy as part of Disney's Investor Day 2020 online event on Dec. 10. No release date for the series has yet been announced.
