One of Lucasfilm's many Star Wars projects has reportedly been shelved.

According to VarietyRangers of the New Republic is no longer in active development at the studio. It is unclear if the series has been put on indefinite hiatus or will return to Lucasfilm's slate sometime in the future. A reason for the move was not given.

Rangers of the New Republic was announced at Disney Investor Day 2020 by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. The show was set to be produced by Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau and take place in the same time period as The Mandalorian and the upcoming Ahsoka TV series starring Rosario Dawson. Kennedy said at the time that the three series would culminate in a "climatic story event."

Plot details and casting news regarding Rangers of the New Republic were scarce, but the series was rumored to feature The Mandalorian's Cara Dune (Gina Carano). However, those plans were canceled after Carano was fired from The Mandalorian and Star Wars for sharing a series of controversial social media posts. Despite her firing, Disney is running an Emmy campaign for her role in Season 2 of The Mandalorian.

A later report suggested that, while Carano's Cara Dune would not be a part of Ranger of the New Republic, the series would go on with new lead. Star Wars Rebels' Hera Syndulla was floated as a potential protagonist.

Still, Lucasfilm, Disney and Disney+ have plenty of Star Wars material in the pipeline. On the live-action TV side, aside from Ahsoka and the upcoming third season of The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm is currently filming The Book of Boba Fett, the Rogue One prequel Andor and the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. The mysterious series The Acolyte and Lando are also in pre-production. Lucasfilm is also working on the animated series Star Wars: Visions and A Droid Story.

Lucasfilm also has major plans for the big screen. Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins is helming Rogue Squadron, set to premiere in December 2023, while Rian Johnson, Taika Waititi and Kevin Feige are each working on their own stories in the galaxy far, far away.
