Star Wars' latest virtual experience game allows you to own and raise virtual porgs.

Announced at 2019 Magic Leap's L.E.A.P. Conference, ILMxLAB -- the immersive entertainment division of LucasFilms -- has created a mixed reality game called Project Porg. The premise of Project Porg is that Chewbacca has left you with a porg and a holographic device. The holographic device contains care instructions from C-3PO, who is voiced by longtime Star Wars actor Anthony Daniels in-game. Over the course of time, the game will teach players porg living habits and routines. According to Matt Martin, Creative Executive for the LucasFilm Story Group, the relationship with your porg is similar to owning a cat or dog.

In Project Porg, your porg builds a family and, soon, you find yourself raising a murder of porgs. You can keep your porgs entertained by having them chase light from a laser pointer, play fetch with a virtual ball or even chew on a little Chewbacca chew toy.

The designers at ILMxLAB collaborated with the team that helped create porgs for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Porgs were created for the 2017 film as a means of addressing the native wildlife that lived on Skelling Michael, the real-life Irish island that doubled for Ahch-To in the movie. The island was covered in puffins and it was impossible to move or erase them, so they were digitally transformed into porgs.

According to Vicki Dobbs Beck, the Executive in Charge of ILMxLAB, Project Porg is an "aspirational experiment" with the goal of sparking interest in mixed reality. Also called hybrid reality, mixed reality combines virtual worlds with real life to create "living stories." Because players aren't bound to a television or tethered console, users have an extreme amount of mobility and freedom to take characters out of their homes.

Project Porg will be available December 2019 as a free digital download for the augmented reality headset Magic Leap One.
