The newest trilogy of Star Wars films have their strengths and weaknesses. Despite what detractors may say, none of them qualify for the title of worst Star Wars movie ever made. However, they are far from perfect films, and part of that is due to the fact that they progressively became more and more about Rey. Rey is an entertaining character, but it felt like they were attempting to establish a solid trio in The Force Awakens that never was seen through.

They gave less time to Finn and Poe as the films progressed despite the great chemistry they had with each other when they shared screen time. Since the story was centered on Rey, both characters ended up severely underused.

10 Poe: He's Absent For Long Stretches Of Force Awakens

It's understandable why Poe disappeared for stretches of Force Awakens as it played up the drama of if he was dead or alive- until he made his triumphant return to the fold. That said, he's only ever there for the start of the movie and the closing thirty minutes or so, making his impact relatively small.

It forced him to have little in the way of character beyond being a hotshot pilot who was essentially this trilogy's Han Solo style character.

9 Finn: His Feelings For Rey Were Completely Shoved Aside

Star Wars Finn And Rey

Kylo and Rey never had any level of chemistry together. That fact's made even worse by the fact Finn had clear feelings for Rey throughout all of Force Awakens and the first half of Last Jedi. Even if the better story was with Kylo, the chemistry between Boyega and Ridley was hard to deny.

Even if they didn't want to go with that romance, Finn's feelings could have been handled far better than they were.

8 Poe: There Wasn't Enough Emotional Impact to The Lives Lost During The Opening Scene of Last Jedi

The opening scene of Last Jedi could have had a lot of emotional impact to it had there been any connection to the characters who died in the assault. Even if we, the audience, didn't have it, Poe should have.

He shouldn't have needed to be scolded by Leia on the loss of life and should have taken that moment to heart. It should have been the start of his change into a more responsible leader, one worthy of being a general to the resistance.

7 Finn: His Entire Arc In Last Jedi Ended Up Being A Colossal Waste Of Time

Kelly Marie Tran Rose Tico Star Wars The Last Jedi

The biggest pitfall in The Last Jedi is the entire arc Rose and Finn go on together. While yes, it gives Finn screen time, it does very little for his character when that screen time serves little purpose at all. It felt like filler in an anime.

Failing the mission as they did would have been fine had it provided any sort of character development for them. It would have been better if they'd been caught, and Rose had to give up the Resistance's plans to save Finn from torture at the hands of Phasma, thus building her as a bigger adversary.

6 Poe: The Way He Learned To Become A Proper Leader Was Mishandled

Poe meets Holdo Star Wars

As with Finn's Canto bight adventure, Poe's arc had a lot of potential, but it's squandered by a nonsensical plotline. Everything about Holdo's character in The Last Jedi made no sense, and it drowned out what should have been a great character development for Poe.

He was finally learning that he couldn't be rash and needed to think things through. His conflict with Holdo could have been handled so much better, especially if he was already mourning the lives lost earlier in the movie.

5 Finn: Movies Should Have Gone Into Greater Depth On His Use Of A Lightsaber

The final battle at the end of Force Awakens had a raw and primal energy to it that isn't always present in the more well-choreographed fights. There was a sense of survival with all three parties, from Kylo constantly hitting himself to Finn doing everything he could to survive.

Finn using the lightsaber felt like a hype moment too, even if he understandably lost. There was potential with him maybe trying to learn the force, but him even grabbing the weapon felt all but forgotten in the following movies.

4 Poe: Too Often He's Reduced To Just Being A Pilot

If any character suffered from being pigeonholed, it was Poe. He was a world-renown pilot and always got the proper shine during aerial battles, but that tended to be most of his screen time. There was never enough time for him to make personal connections with anyone because of it.

It robbed fans of more screen time with Finn and Poe together, a relationship that felt the most organic out of the whole trilogy. Further proof of that is how long it took for him to finally even meet Rey.

3 Finn: His Desertion From The First Order Could Have Had More Emotional Impact

Star Wars Finn Stormtrooper

The opening scene with the bloody hand smearing across Finn's helmet was a great opening and one that gave you a great first look at the character. There could have been more emotional impact on his departure, especially later in the movie. Those stormtroopers would have been his former friends, making it difficult for him to see them die.

None of that came to be on screen, and the closest we got was his battle with FN-2199, which got no backstory to it and just became a meme.

2 Poe: Too Much Of His Story Is Told Through Comic Books

Star Wars Finn Poe feature

One of the best things to come from Star Wars being part of Disney has been the comic books. Many of them, particularly Vader, have been great reads. Poe received five different volumes of books, showing just how much material there was that could be tied to his character.

There's so much of his history that goes unspoken and only gets briefly touched on in the final movie. So little of it was touched that multiple seasons of a television show could be made.

1 Finn: His final battle with Phasma Was Anti-Climatic

Finn_vs_Phasma

The biggest injustice to Finn's character was his battle with Captain Phasma. Every character should have some huge hurdle they had to overcome. It's what made the original trilogy such a good movie. All three characters got their moments to shine. Finn didn't get that at all. Sure, he beat Phasma, but it felt hollow.

There was none of the emotional impact to it that there should have been. There's no reason the movies couldn't have added a bit more time to their rivalry.
