Lucasfilm Games and Ubisoft's Massive Entertainment are developing a brand-new open-world Star Wars video game."We’re really excited about an opportunity to work with the team at Massive, led by David Polfeldt and the creative director, Julian Gerighty," Lucasfilm Games VP Douglas Reilly told StarWars.com. "We’ve spent almost a year now, working to get to know them and what they want to bring to the table. I’m a huge fan of them, personally. I think we’re really excited about where that project is going, because they have a unique vision for the story and the game they want to deliver."RELATED: Star Wars: How Legends Predicted Luke Skywalker's Last Jedi Storyline

"We know that fans of Star Wars value the feeling of immersion — of being transported into the Star Wars galaxy and moving through richly-detailed environments," he continued. "It’s fun to imagine what the team at Massive can do within Star Wars by bringing their innovative spirit and their commitment to quality."

An open-world Star Wars video game has been on many fans' wishlists for a number of years, largely because it came very close to happening not long ago.

Before EA closed Visceral Games in 2017, the studio had been working on a Star Wars game codenamed Project Ragtag, which would have been a linear, action-adventure game helmed by Amy Hennig, the director of Uncharted. After Visceral was shut down, EA Vancouver --  a studio managing support for many of the company's games -- took over the project, retaining certain elements while transforming it into an open-world game. The new code name for the project was Orca, and it would have involved playing as a bounty hunter or scoundrel-type character who could explore various planets in the Star Wars universe. This project, however, was canceled by EA in January 2019.

"The story and the setup and the characters... [were] set up for success but what we had to execute was going to take a while," producer Zack Mumbach said. "I think the company saw that - 'hey you guys are eventually going to make a crazy good game'. At the time, when we got shut down, [EA exec] Patrick Soderlund was even like - what's the game with 'Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner'? PUBG? - they even sent out a press release that was like 'no one cares about single-player any more.'"

The last major single-player Star Wars video game was Respawn Entertainment and EA's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which released in November 2019.
