Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy provided an update on the future of movies in the Star Wars universe and their potential connection to the Skywalker Saga.

In an interview with GamesRadar+ at Star Wars Celebration, Kennedy was asked about the movement of film projects at Lucasfilm. "Of course, they've been in movement all along. As we leave the saga, we have all this great, exciting work happening on the television side that informs so much about where we're going. We want to be very intentional about that," she said, going on to state that there was "no hesitancy" in exploring the space in the timeline beyond the Skywalker Saga: "Oh, yes. We need to create a whole new saga. That takes a lot. There's a lot of conversation around that."

The most recent Star Wars film to receive a theatrical release was The Rise of Skywalker in December 2019. Touted as the conclusion to the Skywalker Saga, the J.J. Abrams-directed feature received mixed reviews from critics, sitting at a 52 percent on Rotten Tomatoes based on a sample size of 516 reviews -- the lowest Tomatometer score of any live-action Star Wars theatrical film. The Critics Consensus reads, "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker suffers from a frustrating lack of imagination, but concludes this beloved saga with fan-focused devotion."

Additionally, The Rise of Skywalker saw the lowest box office returns of the sequel trilogy, finishing with just over $1 billion worldwide. This is approximately half the box office total of The Force Awakens, which opened the trilogy in 2015 and ultimately ended its theatrical run with more than $2 billion worldwide.

Kennedy was also asked about the continued outpouring of support for the prequel trilogy, and how this has impacted Lucasfilm’s approach to their new stories in development. "That's exactly what we're doing with Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni and Jon Watts, especially Dave's new show, Ahsoka. We realize there's kind of been a pattern of a new generation coming along."

Kennedy made a connection in this regard to the sequel trilogy’s audience, which she predicts to become more prominent in the coming years. "All the kids of the kids end up loving the prequels and their parents loved the original movies, and now we have the sequels, not very long ago, there'll be a whole generation attached to that."

All Star Wars films and series in the Skywalker Saga are currently streaming on Disney+.
