Despite Star Wars: The Old Republic never hitting the lofty heights of its competitors, it still provides some of the best stories in any MMO. The real stars are the different class storylines. Each is like its own mini BioWare RPG, offering eight Star Wars-themed stories packed into a free-to-play game.

These provide plenty of options for players looking for a good sci-fi story, especially for those who want to take it on with friends. Some of these classes tell better tales that hold up better than others, but this MMO has more than enough to offer a reason to try a couple of classes out. Here's every class story in Star Wars: The Old Republic ranked.

Jedi Counselor

Star Wars The Old Republic Jedi Consular

Somehow, despite mysticism and force powers being central to the class, Jedi Counselors never come close to the thrilling stories some of the other classes offer. Counselors embark on a mission to discover the cause of a Sith-tainted force plague and heal the galaxy at large. Along the way, you'll become a key player in intergalactic politics and gain allies dedicated to securing the future of the Republic and the Jedi order. The Counselor's story starts off slow, but it does build to some interesting conclusions.

Bounty Hunter

Star Wars The Old Republic Bounty Hunter

Now more than ever, Bounty Hunter should be a top-ranked class. The Mandalorian exists as a successful how-to for making a Bounty Hunter interesting, but we don't see any of those elements incorporated here.

Bounty Hunters find themselves engaged in The Great Hunt, a galaxy-spanning event calling upon the best in the business. As it turns out, that's not you. Players work their way up the ranks of notoriety, offing rivals and eventually bumping elbows with some high ranking officials. An ember of hope burns bright with possibilities that the overwhelming success of the Disney+ show will lead to some positive changes for its analog in-game.

Smuggler

Star Wars The Old Republic Smuggler

Smuggler lets Star Wars fans live out their fantasies as a space pirate and scoundrel with a heart of gold. The class story is passable, if not a little uninspired. Characters start in pursuit of their stolen ship and a fabled lost treasure. Soon, they'll find themselves offered legitimate work by the Republic and, along the way, make some Imperial enemies. The Smuggler quests hit the hallmarks you'd expect from a Han Solo-inspired story, but it never strays far enough from tropes to offer an overall exciting plot.

Trooper

Star Wars The Old Republic Trooper

Players will either find themselves really enjoying the M*A*S*H-meets-A-Team Trooper story or find its themes close to unbearable. Players take on the role of the newest member of the notable Havoc Squad. When it appears like the other members of squad have turned traitor, it's up to you to rebuild the legendary team and bring the treacherous former members to justice. It's a great start that slowly loses steam as players head into the second act and beyond. By the end, Troopers are hunting down imperial super weapons and foiling war criminals in fairly cookie-cutter fashion.

Sith Warrior

Star Wars The Old Republic Sith Warrior

Sith Warrior lets players lead an epic and dark power fantasy. Starting on Korriban, the player becomes the apprentice to the Sith master Darth Baras. As the Warrior travels, they'll silence enemies and former allies to the dark lord before turning on him and claiming his power for the character's own. This class story offers plenty of options for the player to be bad for the sake of being bad, leading to some of the best scenes in the game -- for example, the breaking and turning of a Jedi padawan to the dark side of the Force.

Jedi Knight

Star Wars The Old Republic Jedi Knight

Easily seen as the flagship Light side class, Jedi Knight offers players the best experience the good guys can give. After proving yourself as a padawan and becoming a Knight, the character is tasked with safeguarding the Republic from Sith machinations. The Jedi Knight will track down and end Sith and their apprentices before confronting the Sith Emperor himself. At every turn, characters are given opportunities to live out a classic Jedi story akin to what's come to be expected from a Knights of the Old Republic game.

Sith Inquisitor

Star Wars The Old Republic Sith Inquisitor

The Sith Inquisitor offers players the most interesting force-driven narrative The Old Republic has to offer. Starting the game as a slave, the character soon catches the attention of the Sith Lord Zash. Realizing the player's potential, Zash sends you off on a mission to gather knowledge and relics that will elevate her power to that of a Darth. Manipulating the darkest secrets of the Force, unlimited power and immortality lie within reach -- so long as you don't get powerful enough to attract the unwanted attention of any other power-hungry Sith.

Imperial Agent

Star Wars The Old Republic Imperial Agent

The Imperial Agent starts their story attempting to foster a relationship between the Empire and the Hutts. After catching the attention of a Darth Jadus, the Agent is tasked with bringing a terrorist group to light. As the Agent's story continues, players enjoy one of the best written and intriguing BioWare stories, maybe even Star Wars stories.

Brainwashing, conspiracy, tough moral decisions and espionage intrigue are all present and on display in the Imperial Agent's story. A few classes have more than one ending, but this class has at least five depending on the characters' choices throughout their journey, each altering the player's course as they go.
