Back in March 2021, Lucasfilm and Disney+ announced the full cast for their upcoming Star Wars series Obi-Wan Kenobi. Among the cast list was actor Rupert Friend, who previously starred in the 2015 film Hitman: Agent 47. A new report claims that Friend is, in fact, bringing a major character from the animated series Star Wars Rebels to live-action in Obi-Wan Kenobi.

According to the Star Wars news site Bespin Bulletin, multiple sources claim that Friend is portraying none other than the Grand Inquisitor in Obi-Wan Kenobi. The sources also claim that Friend's character will be one of three Inquisitors featured in the live-action series, the other two being played by Moses Ingram and Sung Kang.

Cinelinx previously reported that Kang was portraying the Fifth Brother, though while Bespin Bulletin has been unable to confirm this, one source says Kang's character does wear a headpiece reminiscent of the Fifth Brother's. That said, sources say that Ingram's Inquisitor is actually the most important of the three. Bespin Bulletin theorizes that Ingram's character is an entirely new Inquisitor Star Wars fans have never seen before.

Nevertheless, if Friend is indeed playing the Grand Inquisitor, it would certainly be rather fitting, as the Star Wars character is something of a "hitman" himself. Introduced as the main antagonist of Star Wars Rebels Season 1 and originally voiced by Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter, Star Trek: Discovery), the Grand Inquisitor is a Pau'an male who was once a Jedi Temple Guard.

As his title suggests, the Grand Inquisitor is the leader of Darth Vader's Inquisitors, an elite lightsaber-wielding force tasked with hunting down and killing the remaining Jedi who managed to escape Order 66 during the fall of the Galactic Republic. The Grand Inquisitor met his demise in the Rebels Season 1 finale during a battle with surviving Jedi Padawan Kanan Jarrus (Freddie Prinze Jr.).

A number of other Inquisitors have been introduced to Star Wars canon over the years. In addition to the Grand Inquisitor, Rebels featured the aforementioned Fifth Brother (Philip Anthony-Rodriguez), as well as the Seventh Sister (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and the Eighth Brother (Robbie Daymond Howard). Meanwhile, the canon novel Star Wars Ahsoka introduced the Sixth Brother. Finally, the canon video game Jedi: Fallen Order featured the Second Sister/Trilla Suduri (Elizabeth Grullon) and the Ninth Sister (Misty Lee).

In Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ewan McGregor reprises his role as Obi-Wan from the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy. The series also sees Hayden Christensen reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse reprise their roles as Owen and Beru Lars, respectively. In addition to Friend, Ingram and Kang, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, O'Shea Jackson Jr., Simone Kessell, Benny Safdie, Maya Erskine and Rory Ross have all been cast in Obi-Wan Kenobi as well.

Obi-Wan Kenobi does not currently have a premiere date, though is reportedly expected to debut on Disney+ in May.
