Ewan McGregor makes his long-awaited return to a galaxy far, far away in the latest Star Wars Disney+ limited series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, with the series pitting him once more against his former apprentice, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), now the Sith Lord known as Darth Vader. The Disney+ show takes place between Episodes III & IV of "The Skywalker Saga," following Obi-Wan's isolation on Tatooine, where he is hiding from the Empire after the events of Order 66, still tortured by his failure of Anakin, and also watching over his son, Luke.

Darth Vader isn't the only big bad in the galaxy, with the Empire under the control of former Chancellor of the Republic, and secret Sith Lord Darth Sidious, played by Ian McDiarmid. Whilst we know Vader will feature into the series, it has yet to be confirmed whether his new master will be making an appearance, with McDiarmid teasing his potential return, yet it would certainly make sense for him to do so and here is why.

Darth Vader's return and his reasons for returning are a little more clear, likely wanting revenge against Kenobi for leaving him badly injured on Mustafar. During the 10-year gap between Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and Obi-Wan Kenobi, he has been strengthening his dark side abilities under the watchful eye of Sidious. Darth Sidious could possibly factor into the series here, perhaps either showing his continued manipulations of Vader in the present, stirring his hatred for Kenobi, or perhaps dedicating an episode to flashbacks, revealing the aftermath of the battle on Mustafar.

Whilst aspects of Darth Vader's beginnings, such as the construction of his lightsaber have been covered in Charles Soule's comic book series Star Wars: Darth Vader Dark Lord of the Sith (2017-2018), which picks up after Revenge of the Sith, it would be great to see some moments of Vader's adjustment to his new life in live-action, seeing him learning more about the Sith and the dark side.

Darth Sidious is obviously the natural person to teach his apprentice, having extensive knowledge of both of these things. Vader's training would be the perfect opportunity to showcase more of the conflicted side of the character, showing his struggles to leave Anakin Skywalker behind. We could see Sidious again clouding his mind, swaying Anakin further to the dark side. Sidious' teachings would be fascinating to see, especially if there are references to his own tutelage under Darth Plagueis.

Darth Vader and Darth Sidious

Though we have seen Sidious' rise to power in the prequel trilogy, and his downfall in the original trilogy (plus whatever that was in the sequels), audiences have yet to see a Darth Sidious at the height of his power. At this time, Sidious was unstoppable, and having Darth Vader at his side only cemented that. Seeing the dynamic evolve between the two characters would be fascinating, moving from Palpatine and Anakin to Master and Apprentice.

It would also be interesting to see more of Sidious' manipulations of Vader, planting the seeds of doubt as he did in Revenge of the Sith, constantly whispering in Anakin's ear, making him question the Jedi Order, his relationships and his purpose, slowly influencing his turn to the dark side. Another storyline featuring Sidious that has yet to be explored fully is his attempts at cloning, which is first mentioned in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and possibly referenced in The Mandalorian Season 2.

If Darth Sidious does appear in Obi-Wan Kenobi, there is one thing that fans would be eager to see, and that is a confrontation between Sidious and Kenobi. In live-action Star Wars media, audiences have not seen Obi-Wan Kenobi face off against the former Chancellor, and the possibility of these two meeting, whether in combat or not is exciting, with Sidious likely to torment Kenobi over his failings with his former Padawan. Whatever the case for a possible Darth Sidious appearance, let's hope his return doesn't disappoint, and is much more satisfying than his appearance in Episode IX.

The first two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi hit Disney+ on May 27.
