Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and scriptwriter Lawrence Kasdan offered new details about the Han Solo anthology film, including the character's age and the film's tone, during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. The story will be set before the events of 1977’s “Star Wars” and will focus on "how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley.”

"The thing that 'Star Wars' has always done so well is it doesn’t spend a lot of time [explaining] the stories that have come before," Kennedy said. "We don't want to do that either. We don't want to spend time going back and answering a lot of questions that, quite frankly, I don't think people want answered."

"I think the key here is that we are identifying an event or events in Han Solo’s life that gives you some idea of who he is and why he is the character we have all known to love," she added.

As the the tone of the film, Kennedy shared, "You can imagine, given who we've chosen to come in and direct, it should be very entertaining and funny... Han Solo is the character inside 'Star Wars' that everybody knows has a wit and sense of humor. So that's what this should be."

After turning down several "Star Wars" projects, Kasdan revealed that it was the character of Han Solo that enticed him to board this project. "They said, 'Here are the things that we'd like to make movies about,' and I said, 'Oh, well, Han Solo. I would write a movie about Han Solo. He's always been my favorite.' And that’s the job that I took."

"[Han Solo] will definitely be probably in the high teens, low 20s," Kennedy said of the character's age in the upcoming spinoff. "We're not introducing you to a 10-year-old Han Solo."

The Han Solo Anthology Film is slated for release on May 25, 2018 and will be executive produced by Kasdan and Jason McGatlin and co-produced by Will Allegra.
