To the chagrin of many Star Wars fans, Disney's sequel trilogy asked more questions than it answered. For example, the final chapter in the trilogy, The Rise of Skywalker, gave only limited screen time to the Knights of Ren and left out key details about Rey's parentage, Snoke's power and Palpatine's survival.

Another big question the sequels declined to answer was how Maz Kanata came into possession of Luke Skywalker's blue lightsaber. Rey found the saber in a basement storeroom of Maz's castle. However, when asked where she got it, Maz simply replied that it was a "question for another time." Although the mystery has yet to be answered fully, further Star Wars content has addressed the topic. Here's what we know about how Maz acquired Luke's lightsaber.

Who Is Maz Kanata in Star Wars?

Star Wars' Maz Kanata looks over at Han Solo and smiles

Maz Kanata made her first appearance in The Force Awakens as an old friend of Han's. Living on the planet of Takodana in her large castle, Maz's inquisitive nature and large glasses automatically made her an interesting character. However, when Rey found a lightsaber – the Skywalker legacy lightsaber, nonetheless – Maz's backstory suddenly became much more intriguing.

Fan interest notwithstanding, there still isn't a lot known about Maz. Like Yoda, her species was unknown, and also like Yoda, she lived an extremely long life. In fact, by the time of the sequel trilogy, Maz was over a thousand years old. During that time, though, she kept busy. She was a "Pirate Queen" and allowed other smugglers to stay at her castle on Takodana. The most interesting fact about Maz, however, was that she was Force-sensitive and had contact with members of the Jedi Order. Perhaps that's how she knew that Luke's lightsaber was of such importance in galactic history.

How Did Maz Get Luke's Lightsaber?

An Ugnaught discovers Luke Skywalker's Lightsaber in Star Wars comics

The last time that Luke's lightsaber was seen on screen was when Vader cut off Luke's hand during their duel in Cloud City. After that, many might assume that Luke simply moved on without that lightsaber. However, a canon Marvel comic published in 2020, Star Wars #4, by Charles Soule and Jesus Saiz, showed Luke actually returned to Cloud City to search for his weapon. However, he didn't have any luck. But the comic also showed that an Ugnaught found the lightsaber and kept it from being destroyed with the city's other garbage.

How, exactly, Maz acquired the lightsaber after that is still unknown, but the story is likely very simple. Maz might have been the Pirate Queen of Takodana, but she spent little time at her castle. She spent most of her years traveling the galaxy and collecting various antiques and treasures. So, until a more detailed story emerges, it's likely that Maz simply found Luke's lightsaber during her broad travels. Whether she simply bought it or had to steal it remains a story "for another time."
