Star Wars icon Mark Hamill recently shared a CGI-free behind-the-scenes photo of himself on the set of The Mandalorian Season 2.

Hamill quote tweeted the image via his official Twitter account. It shows the actor in costume as Luke Skywalker, during the scene in the second season's finale, "Chapter 16: The Rescue," in which the legendary Jedi Master comes to the aid of Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and his allies. The tweet also includes commentary by Hamill, who noted that the photo is further proof Luke's participation in the episode wasn't achieved entirely via visual effects.

As previously revealed in Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian: Making of the Season 2 Finale, Hamill portrayed Luke in reference footage captured on the Disney+ series' set. This material was subsequently re-shot with a younger actor, Max Lloyd Jones, replicating Hamill's performance. Effects house ILM then replaced Jones' head with a digitally de-aged version of Hamill's own likeness circa 1983's Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Hamill later reprised the Luke Skywalker role in The Mandalorian spinoff The Book of Boba Fett, with Graham Hamilton serving as his body double on this occasion. The Book of Boba Fett star Rosario Dawson later described working opposite Hamill as her favorite Star Wars moment so far.

The Mandalorian Star Teases 'Epic' Season 3

It's currently unclear whether Hamill will play Luke in The Mandalorian's upcoming third season, although Pascal recently promised fans that the next batch of episodes will call back to plot threads from prior seasons. "[W]e're going to get a lot of things that were introduced into the storytelling early in Season 1," he said. "Themes and ideas that you'll remember once we get into [the] full fruition of Season 3, and it's epic, epic... but I'm not lying, it is epic... the amount of times I say 'epic' gives everything away, okay?"

Giancarlo Esposito's Moff Gideon will epitomize the impressive scope Pascal described if recent reports about The Mandalorian Season 3 are to be believed. The Disney+ series' main villain will supposedly sport a suit of red and black armor in the third season, complete with a six-horned helmet. Moff Gideon's upgraded gear is also said to include a jetpack and its overall look is apparently similar to the established Mandalorian armor aesthetic.

The Mandalorian Seasons 1 and 2 are currently streaming on Disney+. Season 3 is slated to arrive on the platform in February 2023.
