One of many iconic moments in the original Star Wars film was when Princess Leia Organa met Luke Skywalker for the first time. However, that scene actually had to be reshot after its initial filming -- and Luke was the reason.
Mark Hamill explained in a recent tweet why Leia's rescue from the Death Star's detention center had to be redone. "We had to reshoot the imprisoned princess scene in Star Wars because the first time we filmed it I said, 'I'm Luke Starkiller, I'm here to rescue you.'" The line wasn't a gaffe on Hamill's part -- as i the film's original draft, Luke's last name was indeed Starkiller.
A Huffington Post article the next day mentioned that Hamill made a mistake, but Hamill set the record straight in a subsequent tweet. "[The] article states we reshot the rescue of Leia scene because I 'botched' my line. In fact, we had to redo it weeks later, because my name was changed to Skywalker after we did it the first time (when my name was still Starkiller)." The Huffington Post has since corrected its piece.
Star Wars creator George Lucas made the decision to change the character's name due to the then-comparatively recent Charles Manson murders, fearing a name analogous to "star killer" would be met with negative reaction. Lucas didn't make the call, though, until after filming on the first movie had begun. That said, the name Starkiller did eventually find its way into official Star Wars projects on more than one occasion, with the most recent -- and only canon -- example being Starkiller Base in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
