A series of photos allegedly leaked from the set of Season 3 of The Mandalorian suggest the Disney+ show may be looking to bridge the gap between the original trilogy and the sequels.

A post on Reddit shows three photos that were reportedly taken on the set. One shows what appears to be either a cockpit or escape pod from a ship, while another shows an Imperial style corridor and sliding door. However, it is the first of the three photos that have caused the most speculation, being that it focuses on three red helmets with black markings.

Although reminiscent of the markings on a Mandalorian helmet, they don't fully line up with the Mandalorian designs seen throughout the Star Wars franchise to date, as these usually have a singular horizontal and vertical line arranged to form a T-shape. Instead, the markings on the helmets in the photo are upside-down L-shapes, similar to the helmets worn by Spartan soldiers, suggesting they may be something other than Mandalorian.

The answer may lie in another set of rumors regarding the plot of Season 3. Unconfirmed reports from Making Star Wars suggest that Pedro Pascal's Din Djarin may have to battle a group of Praetorian Guards, and these helmets are worn by soldiers who accompany them. The presence of the Guards in Season 3 leads to the possibility that The Mandalorian will touch on some of the backstory behind the creation of Supreme Leader Snoke, who was revealed to be a living creation of Emperor Palpatine.

The Praetorian Guards were Snoke's private guard seen in Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi, standing by in his throne room on his Star Destroyer, the Supremacy. The Mandalorian has already touched on the fallen Empire's loyal followers and their cloning activities, being that Moff Gideon's reason for pursuing Grogu was to use his Force-sensitive genetic material to continue these cloning experiments. The presence of the Praetorian Guards could be a link between the experiments of Gideon and Snoke.

The third season of The Mandalorian doesn't currently have a release date but is expected to hit Disney+ near the end of 2022. Official details of the plot have not been revealed, but another set of recent rumors suggest that Grogu is about to get an upgrade from IG-11. Allegedly, the deceased droid will be converted into a Beskar-reinforced set of armor for Grogu and will be able to communicate advice to the foundling while he fights for Mandalore.
