The Star Wars universe was built on an incredible number of moving parts and unique components. Naturally, fan's minds drift towards the long list of unique characters, ships and alien species developed for every movie, TV show, book and comic. But it's more than that — Star Wars is populated by planets that play huge parts in the story. In the case of some worlds, they are a character all on their own. This is especially true with a planet clearly strong in the Force: Lothal.

The Lothal System was the world at the core of Star Wars Rebels. It was located in the Outer Rim of the Galaxy, settled mostly by farmers. Lothal was off of primary hyperspace lanes which kept it out of major galactic conflicts such as the Clone Wars. With the rise of Emperor Palpatine, the Galactic Empire made its way into the Outer Rim and took control of the relatively peaceful world. But the most interesting part of the planet's history started thousands of years earlier.

More than three millennia prior to the Empire's occupation, Jedi arrived on Lothal and discovered a vergence. This nexus of Force energies was a beacon to the Jedi, leading to them setting up a temple on that spot. A similar Dark Side vergence exists on Dagobah, which was one of the reasons so many Jedi and Sith have been drawn to that planet over the years.

The Jedi Temple on Lothal

The Lothal Vergence seems to be particularly powerful. Through the temple, Ahsoka, Ezra and Kanan were all able to engage in powerful, life-changing visions that helped them find their paths. It also allowed Ezra to make contact with Master Yoda on Dagobah and ask for guidance. Even more impressive, the temple granted Ezra access to a mystical nexus of space and time that allowed him to save Ahsoka from Vader on Malachor years earlier.

Ezra was the last person to set foot in the temple when he saved Ahsoka. The temple self-destructed, taking out all of the Imperial forces who were trying to breach its secrets when it vanished. But the Lothal Vergence is still there, and still potentially accessible to the right Jedi. Lothal's connections to the Force run much deeper than one structure; the entire planet seems to be strong with the Force.

Loth Wolves, a species of oversized canine endemic to the planet, have shown impressive abilities in using the Force to travel great distances incredibly quickly. It's no accident that a Jedi with the power of Ezra Bridger was born there, or that Kanan Jarrus was drawn to the planet. If there were still a significant number of highly trained Jedi left in the galaxy, one would hope that they would be putting some effort into studying the planet.

This begs the question of why Jedi seemingly abandoned a world so strong with the Force. The temple showed no signs of being used for centuries. While it was not easily accessible in the Outer Rim, Lothal was still obviously a place of great power and potential. Had the Jedi made better use of such resources, and not forgotten their history, perhaps they wouldn't have fallen to Palpatine's machinations.
