Star Wars: The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson revealed he toyed with the idea of including the Force ghost of Anakin Skywalker in the film.

On Twitter, a fan asked if Johnson ever considered having Anakin's Force ghost communicate with Luke or Rey. "Briefly for the tree burning scene, but luke’s relationship was with Vader not really anakin, which seemed like it would complicate things more than that moment allowed," Johnson replied. "Yoda felt like the more impactful teacher for that moment."

In The Last Jedi, after Rey leaves Ahch-To, Luke heads to a hollowed-out uneti tree he believes houses the sacred Jedi texts (in reality, the texts were stolen by Rey and stowed aboard the Millennium Falcon). Just as he's about to burn the uneti, the Force ghost of Yoda interrupts him, only to burn it himself as he teaches Luke one final Jedi lesson.

As Johnson mentioned, Luke's only connection to Anakin we know of is from the closing moments of Return of the Jedi, in which the Force ghost of a redeemed Darth Vader looks on alongside Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi as Luke and the Rebel Alliance celebrate their victory in the Galactic Civil War.

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Andy Serkis, Gwendoline Christie, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern and Carrie Fisher.
