Star Wars fans have obsessed over the parentage of Daisy Ridley's Rey for more than two years, and now her co-star Adam Driver has provided them with a potentially major clue to her origins.
While discussing his role as Kylo Ren in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the upcoming Last Jedi, the actor recalled to GQ "peeling away layers to evolve into other people, and the person Kylo's pretending to be on the outside is not who he is. He's a vulnerable kid who doesn't know where to put his energy, but when he puts his mask on, suddenly, he's playing a role. JJ [Abrams] had that idea initially and I think Rian [Johnson] took it to the next level."
Adding to the idea of hidden layers, he mentioned Rey, and and in the process may have dropped a spoiler. "You have, also, the hidden identity of this princess who's hiding who she really is so she can survive and Kylo Ren and her hiding behind these artifices," Driver said.
Although was have to wonder if Lucasfilm would actually have allowed an actual spoiler of that magnitude to survive to print, the mention of Rey as a princess raises some significant questions, not the least of which is if she's the secret daughter of Leia Organa and, therefore, the sister or half-sister of Kylo, and a princess of Alderaan. Or perhaps, as some have already theorized, she's a descendant of Emperor Palpatine, making her the rightful heir to the Empire.
Arriving Dec. 15, director Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata, Domhnall Gleeson as General Armitage Hux, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma and Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke.
