Video game writer Drew Karpyshyn, the author who created Darth Bane and Revan, believed the storyline of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic wasn't suitable for a movie format.

During a Reddit AMA, Karpyshyn was asked who he believed would be the best casting choice for a hypothetical Knights of the Old Republic film adaptation. "I don't want them to make a KOTOR film. Or a Mass Effect film," the writer replied. "Not if those films are just going to tell the same story as the games. Branching narrative games tell stories in a different way than a linear medium like film, and we have SO MUCH content that you'd have to cut 80% of the story to fit it into a film."

Though Karpyshyn discounted a movie adaptation, he further claimed Knights of the Old Republic might find better success as a television show. "Maybe it could work as a series, but even then I think it would be problematic," he continued. Karpyshyn also stated that he previously experienced trying to tell a gaming narrative in his own novel Throne of Bhaal, which eventually led him to swear off further attempts at a similar project. "It never works well," Karpyshyn said. "But if they knock on my door and drop a fat sack of $$$ on my front step, I'll probably change my tune."

While an official adaptation might not be possible, there are still fanworks exploring the events of Knights of the Old Republic thanks to the dedicated following the game steadily garnered since its release in 2003. One such fan animation depicted the history of Knights of the Old Republic's antagonist Darth Malak, showcasing his duel against his master Darth Revan and his scarring loss at the hands of the Sith Lord. Written and directed by Star Wars fan Scott Anderson, the five-minute video was rendered on Unreal Engine and animated through motion-capture performances.

Matty Schroeder, host of the Defining Duke podcast, previously claimed the upcoming remake of Knights of the Old Republic would replace the original battle system with a more action-oriented combat style reminiscent of Santa Monica Studios' 2018 reboot of God of War. The game will also reportedly feature different gameplay modes for those who want to take a more strategic approach, with one mechanic allowing players to slow down time by opening a menu similar to the system used for Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is available for many platforms, including PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS, Mac OS and PC. The upcoming Knights of the Old Republic remake has yet to receive an official release date.
