Aspyr has already ported a number of classic Star Wars games to Nintendo's hybrid console, including Star Wars: Jedi Knight II - Jedi Outcast, Star Wars: Jedi Knight - Jedi Academy, Star Wars: Episode I - Racer and Star Wars: Republic Commando.

Set nearly 4,000 years before the formation of the Galactic Empire, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was developed by BioWare and published by LucasArts, originally releasing for the Xbox in North America on July 15, 2003, with a Windows version releasing in North America on Nov. 19, 2003. Aspyr later ported the game to Mac OS X, iOS and Android, with those versions releasing in 2004, 2013 and 2014, respectively.

Knights of the Old Republic was followed up by a sequel, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords, which was developed by Obsidian Entertainment and launched for the Xbox in North America on Dec. 6, 2004. Like its predecessor, The Sith Lords later received Windows, OS X, iOS and Android versions, as well as a Linux version. A third single-player entry in the series was planned, though never came to be. However, BioWare Austin did develop Star Wars: The Old Republic, an MMORPG that launched for Windows in North America on Dec. 20, 2011.

News of the original Knights of the Old Republic being ported to Switch comes shortly after it was announced that Aspyr had teamed with Sony Interactive Entertainment to develop a remake of the beloved title. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Remake is said to be in early development and does not currently have a release date, though will launch simultaneously on PC and the PlayStation 5. It will be a timed console exclusive for the PS5 and is expected to make its way to other systems after the fact.
