Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy offered audiences some idea of where the Stars Wars film saga will go in future films.

"We're moving further beyond the existing sequels as we look to our movie space," Kennedy told Empire. "The sequel era is what we talk a lot about in terms of where we're going with our movies, and just how far out from that we’ll go. That's very much the space we’re concentrating on."

Following the final instalment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Lucasfilm announced it was entering a movie hiatus. Kennedy previously revealed a driving force behind the break was the demanding release schedule of one blockbuster per year. She also explained that under the company's new production model, "Anyone who comes into the Star Wars universe needs to know that it's a three-, four-, five-year commitment" because "that's what it takes. You can't step in for a year and shoot something and then walk away…. It requires that kind of nurturing."

The next Star Wars film, according to Kennedy herself, is the presently untitled project by filmmaker Taika Waititi. Little is unknown about the movie, including when it takes place on the Star Wars timeline, but it has been confirmed that Krysty Wilson-Cairns, the writer behind Last Night in Soho, is attached to pen the script.

While there has been a dearth of Star Wars films over the last couple of years, there has been a wealth of television series announced, with more are on the way. The most recent addition is Obi-Wan Kenobi. The show sees Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen return to their classic roles from the prequel trilogy. It follows the titular Jedi Master as he hides from the Galactic Empire after the events of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. The first two episodes premiered on Disney+ on May 27.

Moreover, a new animated Star Wars series is coming to Disney+ and Disney Junior. Young Jedi Adventures will be set during the High Republic era and follow younglings as they train in the ways of the force to become Jedi. Compassion, self-discipline, patience, teamwork and friendship will be central themes of the show.

Several of the Star Wars movies and series are available to stream on Disney+.
