Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor director Stig Asmussen says he has always envisioned Cal Kestis' story as a trilogy, meaning a third entry in the Star Wars Jedi series might just be in the cards.

During an interview with IGN, Asmussen confirmed that the character of Cal Kestis is likely to return for a third game, provided Jedi: Survivor does well. He further explained that discussions regarding Jedi: Survivor began before Jedi: Fallen Order even released. "We were already talking about the second game," Asmussen said. "I mean, frankly, we were talking beyond. And these are conversations that, when we're breaking this story with Lucasfilm, it's like: 'Well, where are we going with the second game?'"

The game director continued, "I always wanted to see this as a trilogy. How can we take Cal and the crew to new places beyond what we were doing in the first game?" Asmussen also revealed that he and his team "had a pretty decent idea of timeframe where we wanted Survivor to take place, what the stakes were going to be, what the tone of the game was going to be, what Cal was going to be up against, and how the crew was going to factor into that. And there's ideas of what we could do beyond that as well."

Elsewhere in the interview, Asmussen stated that while Jedi: Fallen Order and Jedi: Survivor were made using Unreal Engine 4, a potential third game in the series would most likely be made using Unreal Engine 5. "I think it's a pretty safe assumption," he said. "I'm not going to say it's going to be easy. I mean, we have a lot of proprietary things that we've warped the engine into doing what it does for Jedi right now, and we would have to retool some of that to get it to work on any new engine."

Star Wars' Cal Kestis Went the Distance, Now He's Not Gonna Stop

Jedi: Survivor is slated to release on Friday, April 28. The game serves as a direct sequel to Jedi: Fallen Order, which itself originally released in 2019. Set five years after the events of the film Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, Jedi: Fallen Order follows Cal Kestis (Cameron Monaghan), a Jedi Padawan who narrowly survived Order 66. Cal is recruited by former Jedi Master Cere Junda (Debra Wilson) as part of a bid to rebuild the Jedi Order. Jedi: Survivor rejoins Cal another five years later, with the now-Jedi Knight still struggling to survive in a galaxy controlled by the Galactic Empire.

Developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor releases on April 28 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
