The following contains light spoilers for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor pits Cal Kestis against a lot of dangerous forces, but the most deadly may be Dagan Gera. A Jedi who quickly falls down a Dark Path, Cal's discovery of him sets most of the game's plot in motion. On top of that, there's a minor detail regarding the character's survival that could be a useful tool in the franchise's future.

Early in Jedi: Survivor, Cal Kestis discovers that Dagan is not only from over a century in the past but alive and well thanks to his time within a Bacta Tank. This suggests that the Bacta Tanks could be a useful means of keeping characters alive for extremely lengthy periods of time, which could be an easy way to allow the same character to appear in different eras. This reveal could end up being the key to having figures appear in different time periods, opening the door for new perspectives and stories that blend the franchise's various eras.

Dagan Gera Lasted a Century in a Bacta Tank

While exploring a lost Jedi relay station on the world of Koboh, Cal ends up finding a Bacta Tank containing a mysterious figure. This is Dagan Gera, a lost figure from the history of the Jedi Order whose ambitions for an Outer Rim Jedi Temple were complicated by unseen forces. Connecting with his mind by using the Force, Cal discovers Dagan was also a Jedi and was alive in the days of the High Republic. This means he was born at least a century before the events of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

While there may be many reasons he was able to survive that long (as alien races in this world can have very lengthy lifespans), he was kept in his apparent prime by being contained within a Bacta Tank. When he's awakened by Cal and set free, he quickly proves capable of holding his own in a fight against the quietly brutal Cal. This introduces the idea of Bacta Tanks being a means of bridging different eras of Star Wars together -- something that might become an increasingly likely option given the projected future of the franchise.

Why Bacta Tanks Could Be Far More Important Going Forward

Bacta Tanks are a consistent element in the Star Wars franchise. Introduced in The Empire Strikes Back, the device is an effective means of healing grievous injuries. Time spent in the Bacta Tanks can restore someone to full strength and has become a frequent tool used in many Star Wars stories. While it was already confirmed that High Republic Jedi also had access to the tech, what's important about this is that Dagan's quick resurgence after being freed from the Bacta Tank implies it could be an easy way for characters to live on in secret and return for future stories.

Recent announcements about the future of Star Wars indicate that the franchise will be focusing on a higher variety of eras of the franchise -- with James Manigold's Dawn of the Jedi heading deep into the past while Rey's future storylines will explore the future of the series. Coupled with already distinct eras of the series like the High Republic, the Clone Wars, and the Galactic Civil War, it's unlikely most characters could appear in multiple time periods by natural means. Dagan's Bacta Tank reveal indicates that it is possible for characters from one era to be placed into holding and released in a different time period.

Bacta Tanks opens up the possibility that figures from past eras could return in future stories. Being placed in one for long enough could allow other High Republic Jedi to discover the fate their order suffered in future decades, or could allow them to pick up the pieces in a post-Empire setting. Characters from the prequel era could have theoretically been placed in a similar tank, allowing them to appear in future stories. It could even be used to justify other characters' apparent long lives, indicating that Bacta Tanks have far greater uses than just healing wounds. It's an interesting idea that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor sets up, and it could impact what fans see in future entries of the franchise.
