Respawn Entertainment's upcoming sequel, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, will see the protagonist and exiled Jedi Cal Kestis undergo challenges in ways never seen before.

As reported by Star Wars News Net, Cameron Monaghan, the voice actor and model for Cal Kestis, discussed the meaning behind the upcoming game's title in a vague interview with outlet ComingSoon. "He is someone who lived through a genocide, a purging of people from his kind, and has been living in hiding for most of his life. To me, a survivor is someone who is able to persist in the face of extraordinary odds, and I think that that's a lot of what our story is about," said Monaghan. "We see Cal challenged in ways that we haven't seen him challenged before, and it brings him to moments that are more difficult than anything that his character has faced. Without giving anything away, I think that it leads to some very interesting questions for Cal, as well as just for this universe in general."

While still cryptic, Monaghan continued explaining how Kestis' development has made him a stand-out character in the gaming industry. "It's exciting to see how this character is going to shift over time. Watching this character develop is something that's really interesting. This game takes place about five years later than [when] the first one does. Also, over the course of this story, we see Cal really change in a lot of very interesting ways," he said. "That was a joy to be able to explore with this character. He is a really unique person in this world, and I think that that is something that gets communicated in the story in a way that I think is going to be really interesting and morally complex as well."

This news comes at a time when the space-opera franchise was thrust into a renaissance over the past few years, with significant success amongst Disney+ series such as The Mandalorian and the nostalgia-filled Obi-Wan Kenobi. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, the first game in the series, might receive the same cinematic treatment. A new rumor suggests Monaghan will reprise his role in a Disney+ Fallen Order adaptation, though no production details, let alone confirmation that it is in the works, have been released yet.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is set five years after the first game's events, with protagonist Cal Kestis now looking to rebuild the Jedi Order in yet another adventure announced in 2022's Star Wars Celebration via a teaser trailer. The title will contrast heavily with the first, with developer Respawn Entertainment promising a much darker atmosphere this time as Kestis will do whatever it takes to defeat the empire. While few details about the title are public, publisher Electronic Arts stated that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will launch on next-generation consoles only.

The exact release date for the game is still not confirmed, but leaks suggest Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will release in March 2023.
